2 copies win98 se in system
Posted by Ed on October 4th, 2003

hey, system running real slow...did lots of diagnostics
to no avail. Finally downloaded what I thought was a HD
analyizer but was a file analyizer. See lots of duplicate
files and most of them WIN98 SE. Believe 2 copies of OS
running at same time. Thought this would be impossible
but, nothing impossible and have evidence of same (ask
me). Anyway, any ideas on how to correct would be
appreciated. Please keep in mind I am not very good at
this.

Thanks

Re-install 98SE on your PRIMARY drive. Then simply take
everythng important on your second drive onto your first.
Then format your second. It'd be a good idea to get a
liscensed professional to fix the problem for you.

I am telling you to re-install 98SE on your primary first
incase something on your second drive helps your OS run.

I would also like to remind you, I am no expert. So I bid
you goodluck.

Everyone has duplicate files. That is not indicative of a duplicate OS
from outer space. The wisdom is.. let the duplicates be. Under certain
circumstances, they may actually run. In other circumstances, you may go
looking for them. In this day & age of GBs, who can really need the hard
drive space? Anyway, it could be a friendly Vulcan who put them there,
instead of a Xindi.

(1) The mouse & keyboard are the ones with moving parts, & they are
"hooked", meaning tasks will run each time you touch one. Therefore,
with the computer off, unplug the mouse & hold by it's tail until it may
stop spinning & squawking. Also, open & clean the ball & rollers. That
is not a design you may see on the rollers-- it is a band of dirt
running round the center! Also, unplug the keyboard, turn it round &
spank it.

(2) If disabling your virus checker's auto-"System" scan, using it's
Tray button, leaving the other types on, gives immediate & dramatic
relief, I have further info. This supposedly applies to Scan Engine
4.1.60.

(3) If you have "Find Fast", try disabling that.

(4) For sluggishness in navigating folders: Open Explorer, R-Clk My
Documents in the left pane, & select Properties. How many folders
does it contain? If it is around 100, try moving them out. Reboot. Is
your sluggishness gone?

(5) First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a
combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a
permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in
it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is
configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.
