Reboot into Safe Mode and remove all modems and associated Wave Devices in
Device Manager..
Reboot. Use "Show me a list", then "Have Disk" to reinstall correct drivers.

I usually Cancel installation at that point, if allowed to. Then do the
procedure manually from a more sane space after Windows has finished loading.
But hey, it worked! Cool!

Did it. Although I'd booted to Safe mode and checked that there were no
modems, I hadn't checked for the wave devices. I removed them all. Turned
off, and then installed and rebooted. It STILL asked for the ambient
drivers during the boot-up, but when I pointed it to the Aztech drivers, it
loaded right up, and I've since gone online, so all is well with the world.
Thanx.

Once installed a modem's inf file is stored at Windows\Inf\Other
folder so that Windows can offer it for reinstall anytime after
that. Delete that inf file for the 'other' modem and you won't
be offered it again unless it is also amoung the many modems
that Windows can install normally. There should be a matching
..cpl file, named in the inf file, in your system folder as well
that could be deleted if you don't want to install that modem
again. Perhaps two inf files if it also has a wave device with
it.

I'd thought about doing that, but was a bit leery of deleting it. Anyway,
it works now. Thanx

That dilemma is easily solved by not "deleting" a file, but rather, "moving" it,
or renaming it. If nothing else, you can easily undo the trial fix using a
floppy boot and DOS.
