Accessing the Fonts folder from Control Panel
Posted by Richard Roseweir on August 5th, 2003

Am using Windows 98 SE. This past weekend we removed a large number of
unused fonts from the C:\Windows\Fonts folder.

This was done by creating a new C:\Windows\FontsArchived folder and
moving the redundant fonts to it. I must add that the fonts were not
first copied to the FontsArchived folder and then deleted from the Fonts
folder. Rather, they were MOVED by right-click "drag-and-drop" within
Windows Explorer. The unused fonts now remain available to be
"reinstalled" into the Fonts folder if they are ever required. The
number of fonts in the Fonts folder are now reduced to only 52,
including the required default Windows fonts, and all appears to be
working fine.

There is however just one minor glitch. When trying to access the Fonts
folder from within the Control Panel, by clicking on the Fonts folder
icon, it now takes a very, very long time for the Fonts folder to open.
Sometimes it doesn't open until we click on some other folder or file
from within Windows Explorer...which then surprisingly enough, causes
the Fonts folder to suddenly popup (???).

Opening the Fonts folder from within My Computer works just perfectly as
before and all features within it also work just fine.

Have read that the desktop.ini file might be causing this problem but
have not been able to establish an advantage. Can anyone advise as how
to fix the Fonts folder shortcut in the Control Panel?

Two Hints:
1) For sometime previous now, when opening the Control Panel, it
seemingly takes longer than usual for the applet icons to appear, all
the time during which we are entertained by a flashlight "searching"
from side-to-side.
2) Once the Fonts folder has opened once with difficulty in any session,
it opens without delay any number of times thereafter, within the same
session of Windows.

As always, thanks in advance.

I should also add an additional hint:

3) I note that all the other applets inside Control Panel will open over
the top of Control Panel when opened. With the Fonts folder, when it
opens, it causes the Control Panel to close. I had not noticed this
before and perhaps this is the way Windows operates...but maybe not.

Hope this helps a willing reader.

I have long been interested in paring down the font files
in my W98 system, but have never found a way to do it
without screwing up the system because I could never find
a list of the required default Windows fonts. What are
the default fonts, and where did you find the list? How
many are there? If it would speed up my system,
especially MSWord, I would gladly dupm all but the
defaults. How does one prevent accumulation of more
fonts?

Thanks for your reply Glen. I had referred to three of your references
before posting my request for assistance. I'm still at a loss as to why
the Fonts shortcut in the Control Panel takes so long to open.

I've since repaired the attributes on the Fonts folder, run Fontreg,
deleted and recreated the Fonts registry key and reinstalled Fontext.dll
and Desktop.ini (both from the original CD-ROM), but all with no
benefit.

I've put a shortcut to the Fonts folder on my desktop and it works as
expected with the Fonts folder opening immediately.

However the shortcut to the Fonts folder inside the Control Panel
remains sluggish, often taking 2-4 minutes before anything happens (???)
Any other ideas...isn't this fun?

Thanks Henri. Note that the Fonts folder is working just fine even
though I have just removed a huge number of fonts and stored them
elsewhere, all in accordance with sound technical advice. It is the
shortcut to the Fonts folder within the Control panel that has become
(or continues to be) problematic.

I have since created two external shortcuts to the Fonts folder, both
outside of the Control Panel, each of which works quite well. Once I
have opened the Fonts folder with either of these at least once in any
Windows session, the link to the Fonts folder within the Control Panel
then works perfectly for the remainder of that session.

I have also created another shortcut to the Control Panel itself which
presents links to all the applets within the Control Panel as items in a
cascading menu. (Create a new folder in the Start menu and rename it
"Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" sans the quotes
of course. When used to access the Fonts folder, this link works
perfectly. Again, once the Fonts folder has been opened at least once
with this link in any Windows session, it will easily open via the Fonts
folder link in the Control Panel for the remainder of that session.

It appears that when Windows is starting, the link to the Fonts folder
within the Control Panel is not being "initialized". It is only when
the Fonts folder has been opened at least once from elsewhere that it's
link within the Control Panel is being recognized.

Any other ideas as how I can delete and then recreate the link to the
Fonts folder within Start > Settings > Control Panel ?

This article may give you some clues. Note that the Font Folder is a
system
folder and in my opinion is not to be tempered with. Check your win.ini
and
your registry for some other issues.
