- Context Menu causes comp.to hang
- Posted by on March 7th, 2004
I'm running Win98SE and everytime I try to right click on
the desktop or in windows explorer I get a little
hourglass and my computer will hang indefinetly. I can
bring up the context menu in applications like Internet
Explorer and notepad. I believe it is a registry problem.
I've had this problem for about a month now and ran out
off ideas on what to look for, any help would be
appreciated.

The Windows shell (Explorer) shares many libraries with IE.
Later versions of IE have a repair tool that verifies and re-registers
its library files.

Another thing you can try is to boot to DOS and at the prompt enter
the command SCANREG /FIX This will essentially clean up the
registry.
Another possibility is that you have a program that has added a
corrupt context menu entry in the registry, or a handler for a context
menu item is hanging and not returning to explorer, or is returning
but returning bad data. Did you install any apps just prior to the
problem?

Do you have Norton Anti Virus?
A Live Update some weeks ago caused this sort of problem. If you think this
is possible, visit the Symantec support site, where I'm sure they have a
fix.
