Always do a ScanDisk first and make it a 'Thorough' one about every six
months or if things get slow.

Make sure that no applications are running in the background, including
Screen Saver, except SYSTRAY and EXPLORER.

I use WindowWasher

rid of loads of unwanted rubbish in seconds.
