Hi Andrea,

I would suggest you start by doing a virus scan with up to date virus
software, then scan for and removing any installed spyware.
If you are in need of virus software, here are a couple to choose from for
free.
Download the software, and in Update Manager run Update
then do a complete virus scan.
Free Offer: eTrust EZ Armor Security Suite from Computer Associates
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm
AVG Anti-Virus - Free Download Page:
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Search and destroy any installed SpyWare:
Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility that scans
your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware
components and lets you remove them safely. After installing
Ad-Aware make sure to run the update feature before scanning.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it
prevents it from ever being installed. SpywareBlaster is
a non memory resident utility. It works by setting a "kill bit"
for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the
installation of any of them from a webpage.

Check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

[Many anti-spyware sites continue to suffer from a week-long DoS attack.
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

It is most likely a trojan on your system.

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

Read here:
http://doxdesk.com/parasite/CoolWebSearch.html
and
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds.
Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install, update and run SpyBot Search & Destroy, scan your system, and then remove the items in RED only.
SpyBot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

Download, unzip, and run Hijack This, but don't remove anything with it yet:
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
Follow the instructions at this Tutorial:
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
to save the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=30
http://forums.net-integration.net/
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?act=idx

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

It is almost always a waste of time to respond to CDOers. Few have a clue as
to how to see the responses.

Thanks guys for your helpful suggestions...
BTW - I had already taken the suggestions and already had
run one of the programs by the time I made the second
post - so while I appriciate the help - I certainly dont
appriciate being made to look like an idiot with the
following comments:

<<It is almost always a waste of time to respond to
CDOers. Few have a clue as to how to see the responses.>>

<<News Rule: "Where the From line contains 'anonymous',
Mark it as Ignored and Stop processing more rules.">>

<<Isn't this just like when some one is drowning, and you
can't reach them to pull them out?>>

Oh the irony considering that upon sending emails to
several of the above responents the MAILER-DAEMON shot the
emails back - the difference between that and anon. - oh
wait there is none...

Although - thanks again for the software advice.
Everything is fixed now...Oh wait - that right - I dont
know how to open the repsonse - gee that must be what
those pretty little x and - are for...

Well, get off the CDO wagon then. You obviously have no idea how much wasted
time the majority of CDOers cause. Not your fault, I know, but you are
wearing the CDO label.

It is the term used for the MS web-based forums, where many of the newsgroup posts now originate.
If you look at the headers of a post from the web-based interface, it contains the line:
X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

BTW, why are you using such an outdated version of Outlook Express? According to your headers, you are still using OE 5.00.3018.1300 :-o

Emails to respondents will generally fail because we are not quite dumb enough use our real email address in the newsgroups. In addition to it causing us to be swamped by unsolicited emails for tech help, it also causes massive quantities of spam and (worse) hundreds of virus-attachment emails to fill our inboxes to the point of being unable to use our email accounts at all.

(Actually, the rule I use highlights posts by "Anonymous" in a certain color

It's sad to say and sorry you took umbrage at my post but the overwhelming
majority of posters using the web-interface (and their numbers are legion)
seldom find their way back to the newsgroup, let alone know to click on the

valuable /and/ volunteered: I see no point wasting it by making what for all
intents and purposes will be a "dead end" reply.
