- Getting error message - CMOS CheckSum Error - Defaults Loaded - CMOS battery failed
- Posted by Ismael on February 4th, 2004
Hello everyone,
I'm getting the following error message "CMOS CheckSum Error - Defaults
Loaded - CMOS battery failed". I could change the battery but it looks like
the battery was soldered on to the motherboard and may become difficult to
remove and replace. If I don't care about having the wrong time or saving
other/different settings in BIOS other than what the defaults are, I was
wondering if it is necessary to change the battery? I can always bypass
this error by pressing the F1 key and then the computer proceeds to load
Win98SE. Does anyone know of any side affect of not replacing the battery
on the motherboard?
Thanks to all that reply,
Ismael Jr.

I don't know, really... but... I guess... if the default BIOS settings
hold, & those are what you use... then...
Anyway, BETTER put these two lines at TOP of Autoexec.bat...
DATE
TIME
C:\>date
Current date is Wed 02-04-2004
Enter new date (mm-dd-yy):
C:\>time
Current time is 3:01:24.42a
Enter new time:
If the prompts report correctly, just hit ENTER. If not, enter the
correct values. This will set the date/time that Windows will use.
To see more info... "DATE /?", "TIME /?".

Yeah, it's necessary to change the battery. CMOS stores lots of other
information, like the physical layout of your hard drive. You would, I
assume, be very unhappy if your PC woke up one morning and decided to reset
those settings and trash your hard drive?

That would depend on what the "default" BIOS settings are. If the default
is "AUTO" then the BIOS will go out and find the settings for the drive
each time it boots. That is how most of my systems are configured.

.... or suppose it lost his COM port settings, or memory speed settings ...
the hard drive was an example of the other information it stores.
THE BATTERY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. It's that simple. Failing to do so will
eventually result in system problems unless the system is fully
re-configured before being powered-up after being off.
