HELP!! - Win98SE won't recognize CD rom drives
Posted by Paul on August 24th, 2003

Hi,

My wife decided she wanted a faster computer, so I run
down to the local computer store and get a P4 chip and
motherboard. An Intel 2.4 GHz chip and a 800 MHz Intel
board. I installed it, hooked up all the wiring and
turned it on.

The BIOS recognizes all the hardware, so that indicates to
me that I hooked everything up correctly.

When it boots up into win98, the OS goes looking for
drivers to install. The drivers are on a CD ROM supplied
by Intel. Win98 doesn't seem to recognize that I have a
couple of drives. I disconnected one drive to see if
there was a conflict, but it didn't help.

I booted up in the safe mode, but that didn't help.

I tried re-installing windows to see if that would help.
I booted off the CDROM (the bios lets me do that).

It asked me if I would like to enter setup from the CD-Rom
and I answered Yes.

It then went through its beginning system checks and then
said that it would start formatting the C Drive (the
thought of reformatting the C drive scares me - I don't
want to erase everything).

I told it to go ahead and it said insert the CDROM in the
drive. The CDROM is already in the drive. Hitting Enter
causes a pop-up to display 0% of drive C formatted and the
previous window pops up again asking me to put the CD in
the drive.

Any help you may be able to provide will be greatly
appreciated.

Cheers!

Paul

Add'l information

I found the Win98 floppy and booted off the floppy. The
setup program then checks the hardware with no errors. It
then says "scanning system registry" followed by "copying
files needed for windows setup" and then it freezes on me.

Will win98se work with the higher speed processors or do I
need to upgrade to XP?

Cheers!

Paul
