Help! Windows Explorer disabled by Windows Upgrade!
Posted by Al on July 8th, 2003

Yesterday I went to the Windows Update website to add any
critical updates to my Pentium III running Windows 98
Second Edition. Windows update determined that I needed
14 updates, including I.E. 6.0 and numerous Security
patches for I.E. 5.5. I installed I.E. 6.0, then the 13
other updates successfully. After completion, I rebooted
the computer. From that moment on, the computer has
failed to start Windows Explorer, on every attempt,
producing the following error Message: "Explorer has
caused an Invalid Page Fault in SHDOC4O1.DLL" After
running Norton and Mcaffee virus programs, no fault has
been found. The Norton Rescue disk also found no problems
whatsoever. I cannot boot the computer into "Safe Mode"
as the selection cannot be numerically entered
or "arrowed" down. Microsoft informs me that my support
expired on June 30, 2003. The computer manufacturer,
eMachines, also only offers $$ support. Computer worked
FLAWLESSLY before downloading the recommended Updates from
Microsoft. Any ideas? Please help before I have to take
it in to a tech. Thank you all in advance.

Reinstall, or start all over - from scratch? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try
the former first.

ATTENTION - the following can happen to you if you also
insist on installing umpteen updates in one reboot!!!

They (updates) were designed for a reboot for each
one.
