How can I prevent W98SE from using short file names for wordpad files.rtf
Posted by ronmanly@nowhere.com on March 1st, 2004

Everytime I open one of several wordpad files with similar names it shows
only an unintelligible short filename [~n] for it [even though I have
selected:
Dispay the full path in the address bar
Dispay the full path in the title bar]
Worse yet it wants to save the files with those unintelligible short file
names.
W95 allowed you to use long file names, but W98 takes this capability
away!!!
Is there anyway I can prevent W98 from behaving this way?
Thanks for any help.

Let me see if I have this straight.

Opening documents in WordPad:
You have files with long filenames, but WordPad only appears to recognize
them by their short filenames? (All files in FAT-based file systems have
both long filenames and "DOS 8.3 format" short filenames are generated
automatically.)

Saving documents in WordPad:
Here's where I'm unclear. When using SaveAs to save an existing document
with a new name, it is natural for WordPad to default to the existing
filename. If the 8.3 format name is what it is seeing, this would account
for that behavior. But do I read you correctly that you *can't* change the
name to a long filename (or can, but it saves it in 8.3 format, anyway),
and/or that when you save a changed document, it automatically loses the
long filename and only saves the 8.3 format name?

Is this effect *only* noticeable in WordPad? Not in NotePad, for instance,
or MS Paint, or any other program? If so, I'd uninstall and reinstall
WordPad. Start, Settings, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab,
Accessories, Details. Uncheck WordPad, click OK twice, then restart your
machine (just to be sure.) Then go back and reinstall it.

If other programs are doing the same thing, that's a weird one, and I'm not
sure where to go. Have to think about it (or ask Chris Quirke, the file
system guru.)

Question: Have you installed an alternative text editor to replace Notepad?

This old W95 article is all I know about this,
other than that I do remember a very long discussion
about this in this group or the W95 group a while back.

Long File Name Lost After Using Send To Command with WordPad

That discussion was in this group and I remember it well. When using a Send To
shortcut to open a file in Wordpad only the SFN will be used. However, IIRC
when you save the file, instead of using Save, use Save As and then either type
in the file name enclosing it in double quotes or use the browse and point it
back at the original LFN file.

Using SendTo instead of OpenWith? Interesting trick, <s>.

Thank you both for you input. Always fun to gang up on a problem!

Not only with Wordpad either. That Send To shortcut can be problematic (with
long filenames) in some other programs, as I recall.

YW. Send To is your friend, or was that Google? <g> In this case, unless you
know the work-around for file names people experience exactly what the OP did.
It's just the way OLE handled it back when WordPad was written. Remember that
WordPad is old enough to grow whiskers now.

I thought you subsequently came up with a fix, using "/L" or something
in a Folders Options field or was it in a Shortcut Properties field?

%L

Explorer will pass the long name when you "open" a file by clicking
on the file if %L is specified in the registry's open verb command.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\rtffile\shell\open\command
C:\Progra~1\Access~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%L"

%1 passes the short name.

C:\Progra~1\Access~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

So what we need to do is find an equivalent way to do this in the registry for
the "Send To" function. (Yeah, I know, dream on....)

Yeah, I think so. I forgot which other apps I had had problems with Send To
(used the short file names only). Maybe it was MMJB, can't remember now.

Should be able to do it by including the %L in the shortcut.

Uh-oh. I created "New WordPad Document.doc" on the Desktop & clicked it.
It opened in Wordpad with the LFN in the title. Also, the File menu
shows the LFN, and Save As shows it as well. All this, and...

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wordpad.Document.1\shell\open\co mmand
(Default) C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

"Folder Options, File Types tab, Wordpad Document, Edit button,
highlight Open, Edit button". That also is...
C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\rtffile\shell\open\command
(Default) C:\Progra~1\Access~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

....Write Document in Folder Options...
C:\Progra~1\Access~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

%L% does appear in my Registry 127 times. The huge majority of them deal
with WMP; the rest, ddeexec. So spake Registry Detective!

George:
Here is the shortcut to wordpad:
Target: "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE"
Start in: "C:\Program Files\Accessories"
How would you put it in there, and have it work properly? (Did you try it
out?).

George (Bindar Dundat) wrote:

I don't even have WordPad installed Bill. I use other apps including a text
editor that will open large files.
Target. "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" "%L"
should do it. If not post back and I'll install WordPad and check again.

It works fine if you open it directly. The problem is in the drag and drop
handler. %1 does not work in that case. You have to use %L (note that I am
using the uppercase L only to differentiate from the numeral 1

All I said was that the SFN was "passed" if %1. The app can get the
LFN from that if it wants.

Blanton, you're off the hook, then.

Dundat, I opened an empty Wordpad instance & dropped the document onto
the Title bar. Result: same as before. LFNs are in all those places.

Next I put a shortcut into "C:\Windows\SendTo\", Target...
"C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE"

OK, fine! That one is only getting SFN's. But I couldn't get...
"C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" "%L"
....to work.

| It works fine if you open it directly. The problem is in the drag and
drop
| handler. %1 does not work in that case. You have to use %L (note that
I am

Well, after messing with it... Using SendTo is the *only* way I get the SFN
issue on my 98SE machine, and using %L does *not* remedy it.

Even when the SFN issue is present, Saving does not lose the LFN. It just
shows in teh title bar, and is the default in a SaveAs procedure.

Gonna go watch election returns and see how much more the tax bill will be
next year.
