How to empty my recycle bin ?
Posted by Ayam on February 20th, 2004

I posted an inquiry yesterday.

I had my recycle bin (RB) icon on the desktop, but only
available items on menu (hen right-clicking) were :
- cut
- create shortcut
- delete
I could not empty it, nor monitor any properties.

I was advised to run under DOS, and write the following
command : DELTREE RECYC*.*, and informed that this would
delete the RB file, and create a new one (empty) after re-
booting.
The RB file was indeed swept from the Windows directory,
but no replacement.
I still have the same icon on screen, and the same limited
options.
Any further advice? Thanks in advance for any contribution.

Go to Start/Run and enter "sfc". The System File Checker will try to
make sure Windows is OK.

If the System File Checker cannot correct the problem, rerun Windows'
Setup program.

Ayam,

Before you do as Bill suggested you better read this first...
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/using_sfc.html

I can tell you from experience System File Checker can and has hosed a few machines.

All the best,

Start the computer in "Command Prompt", type

deltree c:\recycled

and press "Enter". Confirm the deletion, then type
"win" to start Windows.

http://www.kellys-korner.com/ For an excellent Bin write-up & fixes
http://www.aumha.org/ Perhaps here too
www.aha.ru/~mwz/files/bin-fix.cab Zhilin has something
http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/er1026.htm Leboeuf's stuff
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=136517

I actually didn't run the .reg programs I downloaded from Kelly, which
would rebuild the Recycle Bin in the Registry. I looked through the docs
and extracted this smaller fix for a corrupt Bin:

1. "START, Shut Down, Restart in MS DOS mode"
2. Enter "Deltree /y c:\recycled\"
(No quotes. You need the closing backslash [\], she says.)
Repeat for each partition you may have with a Bin.
3. EXIT or Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows.
4. Delete something useless & empty the Bin.

BE CAREFUL, though; DELTREE is powerful. Get all the way to the end of
that Deltree line, before you hit the Enter key.

You might want to recheck that link for Kelly. I *think* all of the Win 98
files have been removed.

I myself have often suspected she has been consumed in XP-radiation!
More is the pity, BUT I do have copies of her .regs, for anyone who
complains they are no longer there. Anyway, Zhilin may have something.
