- How to Un-associate a File Type with a Specific Program
- Posted by rhpeters on December 26th, 2003
Hi, could someone please help! ... How do you dis-associate a file type from a particular program trying to open it? (When I tried to open a file, a pop-up box offered me different programs to open the file, I tried one, it didn't work, and I inadvertently unchecked the "Always ask" box, so now I have an association to the file extension of a specific program to open with. I'd like to GO BACK to the status where the pop-up box asks me to select, how do I undo any association to specific program?)
When I go in "My Computer", "View", "Folder Options", and "File Types", it will let me CHANGE the program associated with the extension, however, I don't want to do that, I want to rather disassociate with ANY program, so the pop-up box will occur again asking me to select a program at the time I try and open the file.
Thank you!

If you're sure you have the correct extension entry located in File Types,
simply remove the entry to disassociate it.

Brian,
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
I was at first reluctant to REMOVE the file extension represented in the file type list, thinking I'd never "put it back" right. Bit now I'm deducing that THOSE file types listed are the ones WITH program associations already! I could not find any documentation in "HELP" how to do the disassociation.
Again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Sincere,
