IPHLPAPI.dll will not start - other memory probs (1)

I can't make this post display from ANY forum. It must be too long (and it's
grown over time). (My wife always says I talk to much.) Either that or I
have died and gone to Hell.

I'm going to take a shot of posting it in multiple (4) parts - one as this
part and the others as replies. I know it's going to be a pain to read this.
Sorry.

My post of 02/11/04 "My post won't display?????:

Unless your posts had to do with 1. Picture size, and 2. JPEGs being saved
as BMP files from IE, or you used a different name, your posts have not
arrived.

You are using the CDO interface at Microsoft's Support pages, so that may
have something to do with the failure. Profanity, especially m*nged
profanity, would not, to my knowledge, be involved--little is any censorship
of these groups except for viruses and obvious commercial intent (SPAM).

But, we see you now. What's your question? And you might consider using a
real newsreader to access these groups. See http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/

Thanks Robear, but that's not the scenario. I have had roadrunner for two
years. And my computer is not new. It's old and I have all the Windows
patches and updates (or so the Microsoft site says) escept a few foreigh
language things I don't need. I keep AOL because it's the only hookup from
my beach place (no broadband). Plus my wife likes it and says she won't part
with it. I would dump it in a heartbeat otherwise.

This has been really weird. The Iphlpapi.dll cannot start problem is
intermittent and may be AOL related so I read. But I am also having
kernel32.dll problems. I have done some stuff on my own to try and fix it
but it's over my head and I know it.

I have Norton Internet Security 2004 (run overnight everynight) and have
recently downloaded and run adaware, spybot, and CWShredder. (Is Norton any
good? Those programs found a ton of sh*t.) I'm pretty sure my system is
clean now - at least of the mundane - but I'm starting to wonder if it's not
possessed by demons. Right after I posted this first part the connection to
the msnews server stopped working and while I was pondering (aka cursing)
that I had a kernel32.dll shut down of almost everything.

Let me post the rest of this so you know the full story. I am open to any
and all suggestions and help. It's getting to be like a war on here. Thanks
for your time.

post was too long to post using that method. We will see soon because I am
now attempting it with the OE newsreader. (My OE was also screwed up until
this morning. Could not logon to the my ISP server because the logon
password was corrupted/lost. I didn't really know that as I had never really
tried to use OE at home until this came up.) Didn't work obviously.

I knew I could post to the site from the support page. I had made a couple
that worked just fine before the "My post will not display????" post - none
that you mentioned, however. But it was ONLY THIS POST that would not go
through. I was hearing the theme song to "The Twilight Zone" with every
misfire I can assure you.

I have to say chuckled at all of the responses to my "My post will not

the the profanity tutorial. This is for you Delores: <^> <(.¿.)> <^>. (I'm

Here is my elusive, non-appearing post. Fifth time's the charm <fingers out

----------
IPHLPAPI.dll will not start - other memory probs

My system is a Dell Demension XPS T500 (500mhz). I am using Windows 98
4.10.1998 (fully patched and upgraded from the MS site), IE6.0, Norton
Internet Security 2004, and I just downloaded AOL 9.0 for it's supposedly
enhanced security about a week ago. (I have been having some security
warnings from Norton about attempts by someone to contact my computer using
a Backdoor/SubSeven Trojan and other sweet things and am paranoid.) I also
have RoadRunner. (Since reading here I also have installed and (very
carefully) run adaware, spybot, and CWShredder with some eyeopening results.
Is Norton any good at all??)

Prior to upgrading Norton and downloading AOL 9.0, I was experiencing some
memory problems - getting a lot of page fault errors at various Internet
sites , getting dangerously low memory messages when running an online poker
program (www.partypoker.com - fun btw) if I tried to access more than two
tables in one sitting without rebooting, many unstable system warnings and
system lockups, and (I think this was caused by a memory problem) when
playing Warcraft III as a single player (not online) - the game would get
more and more sluggish and slow, almost to the point of inoperability.

My first stab at curing my memory problems was to upgrade my RAM from 128 to
384 MB. This may have helped somewhat, but then I started having a host of
other memory problems.

Recently, I have gotten several error messages while on the poker site to
the effect that party poker had caused a kernel32.dll problem and I get
booted from the site. (Prior to the RAM upgrade I just froze up and couldn't
get off.)

I read some stuff and tried adding this to the CONFIG.SYS file:

FILES=65
BUFFERS=40
STACKS=64,512

and by deleting the Windows swap file, WIN386.SWP, and letting it rebuild
itself.

This seemed to help somewhat. I stopped getting so many page fault errors
and some other related problems seemed to clear up a bit. However, I think I
am still having some kernel32.dll problems caused by the poker site. I can't
be sure because the error message box is now completely blank except for the
OK button when it pops up - when it rains it pours - but the result is the
same - I get booted off the site. But now, when I try to reboot the system,
it usually freezes up so completely that I have to resort to turning the
machine off. (Ctrl, Alt, Del won't work and I can't access shutdown or
restart.) Come to think of it, maybe that's progress since before adding the
RAM I just froze up on the poker site.

If that is not enough to make me pull my hair out, I am now quite often
getting a message on the reboot that the IPHLPAPI.dll file can't start.
(Maybe 2 out of 10 times I get this - but I'm rebooting a LOT.)

Out of curiosity I ran a search on IPHLPAPI using Windows Find and found
several IPHLPAPI.dll files - one in C:\windows\system, several in old AOL
versions (5,6, and 7 - I did not get AOL 8), and one in C:\program
files\common files\AOL\ACS\net\WIN98, which I assume must be for AOL 9.0.

So I am now thinking that this problem is possibly unrelated to my other
memory problems. Since it appears AOL provides its own IPHLPAPI.dll files,
my recent download of AOL 9.0 (and its attendant IPHLPAPI.dll file) could be
the source of the IPHLPAPI.dll problems. Anybody familiar with this? If so,
anybody have any suggestions? Should I get rid of AOL 9.0 and see if that
solves the IPHLPAPI.dll loading problem? Or before that, should I contact
AOL and see if they have any input on the matter? (I do kind of like 9.0 -
imagine that.)

Any ideas on a further fix for my other memory problems - the kernel32.dll
problem, in particular? Cause I definitely still have some. (Other than the
poker site boot-offs, I've had a couple of what look like Windows messages
in the last few days saying that Norton could not run due to low memory, and
the screen is nothing but a colorful blur when I try to get out of it.)

Could my video card drivers or the card itself be causing some of these
problems?

Frankly, I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I've seen some posts about
restoring the kernel32.dll file from the Windows CD - but I'm a CPA/CFO,
not a computer tech - and I wanted to make sure I had some specific
instruction as to how to do that for my version of Windows before I screwed
something up big time.

Nah - my wife would like that too much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S. - This post (all but the inserted comments about the adware killers)
was written BEFORE cleaning up my system with the adware killer software.
That may have helped somewhat (things do seem better), but I haven't had
much time to visit the poker site, etc. in the interim. (Been too busy
cleaning up my system and trying to figure out how to make this post. Was
interesting and kind of fun tho.) So, I'm not convinced that these memory
problems just went away.

Thank you to everyone on this site. I've learned a lot from you in the last
few days and don't think I'll go away completely even when I get my memory
problems ironed out. Very valuable service you perform here.

IPHLPAPI.DLL & AOL9:

You are most certainly not alone: http://snipurl.com/4ibx

Hence my recommendation to dump AOL. And imagine, you're /paying/ for it,
on top of your RR service! In none of your earlier posts did you mention
AOL9 AFAIK. I figured it out from your un-munged posting address (which
you'd best munge IMHO).

KERNEL32.DLL ERRORS:

You may need new video drivers. Check the website of your video board or
computer manufacturer. Meanwhile, you can do the following:

1. Use the default mouse pointers.

2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.

3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (Start | Settings |
Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will see
little, if any, performance degradation.

4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers. (Note that
even with updated drivers, many Win98 users simply cannot run the newest,
resource-demanding applications.)

Also check your system for "hijackware":

Dealing with Hijackware
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

No, I can see I'm not. And the first guy's problems sound eerily familiar -
probably because it's me. It's a post I made earlier today - in full, not in
pieces - that does not show up on here - at least not on my OE reader.
Anybody else see it on here? How frigging weird is that?

Yeah, I agree. Guess I'll have to get a divorce or at least a good muzzle.
How do I munge the e-mail address? (I'm a virgin munger.)

Thanks for the other input too. I speculated that the video drivers might
be part of the problem in the post that appears on the Google search. For
some reason it didn't make the final draft in the piecemeal post on here.
Thanks for confirming that and the step-by-step input on checking it out. I
updated the adaware, et al, before I ran it and will before I run it again.
I also downloaded HiJack This with the adaware, etc. but I haven't run it
yet. Was kinda scared to. I will tonight. Thanks for the website address for
the expert analysis of the results.

Now my post that never appeared on this board has disappeared from the
Google search of this board. Make sense? Hell no. BUT it was on this search
last night. It was entitled "Re: My post will not display???? AND MORE..."
It represented my THIRD attempt to post here about my memory problems and
was essentially the same thing as the 4 parter that's on here now - only not
broken down into parts. It never displayed on this board so I reposted it
using another subject heading and breaking it into 4 parts. Do you think I'm
nuts? That's OK - I'm starting to wonder myself.

Well, before you send the men in white coats to get me, here's some more
food for thought in the mystery of the posts that are here but not here. My
SECOND post on this same subject matter, which also never displayed on this
board, is now appearing on the Google search of this board.

From the Google search results - the 6th entry down at this point:

Different subject header - but essentially the same post without the
commentary about how hard it was to post it. If you click on the link in the
Google search (if it's still there), it takes you to the post, which is
purportedly on this board yet is not displayed on it. Strange but true. The
fact that this post did not display on the board here led me to post "My
post will not display????" , which displayed and got a few hoots as well as
some sympathetic responses. It also led to my third attempt to post about my
memory problems in "Re: My post will not display???? AND MORE...," which,
as I said above, did not display on this board but was on this same Google
search of this board last night - but is gone today.

Does any of this matter in the whole scheme of things? No, I guess not. But
this has been a very frustrating and somewhat mindboggling experience for
me, and I just wanted to sound off about it. Weird does not begin to
describe it. And getting weirder by the minute.

Thanks for listening.

When I signed onto the newsgroup from OE newsreader, OE gave me posts from
02/10/04 forward. However, neither of the two posts above dated 02/11/04
were included. (Of course the ones prior to the 11th were not.)
Additionally, after I made the test post above but before I made the 4 part
post on my iphlpapi.dll and other memory problems, I tried to make that 4
part post as a single post. It did not display on the board for me to see

What does all this mean? For sure, it means that both you and I have wasted

With your OE reader, try Tools/Get next xxx headers.

Under Tools/Options/Read you can change the xxx to your liking. Between 500

1. Disable NIS completely to see if doing so helps. Norton's AntiSpam and
script blockers have been a real headache for gazillions of users and adding
AOL9/BYOA could only compound the problem IMHO.

2. News reader issues:

Tools>Options>Read>Get XXX headers at a time

You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click on the newsgroup in
Folders pane>Synchronization Settings> select New Messages Only. Now every
time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will download the next-newest
set of headers/messages.

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will 'Mark
as Read' all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet
downloaded. Now return to the "Get XXX headers at a time" option and totally
disable it.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files....htm#cleannews (lotsa good
stuff there).

3. Especially in long, ongoing threads, please <snip> out extraneous or
unrelated stuff in earlier posts you're quoting.

Did this yesterday. Too early to tell yet if it stopped the kernel32.dll
problem completely but when I visited the poker site I had a whole new set
of graphics (chips on the table and a nicer, more updated set of controls
with which to play the hand and access chairs at the table) so it did
something for sure (was not an update at the site because I have seen this
set-up before using my office computer and knew it was available and
wondered why I was not getting it at home).

<snip>

When all else fails, HijackThis
Did this yesterday too but no one has yest interpreted the results. Will
keep checking.

Already was doing that everyday. Thanks for the help.

1. Use the default mouse pointers
2. Turn down your color depth
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper

OK. Did you check for graphics driver updates? (You may have said so
before & I'm not going back to look. <g>. NRN.)

The DoS attacks continue, I'm afraid. I just got it, too. The
Spyware/Parasites forum here is up and running though:
