Long File Names
Posted by Gord Campbell on September 26th, 2003

I am trying to backup our files that are located on a central hard disk by
copying the files via windows explorer to another hard disk. I keep getting
an error message saying file cannot be copied... - file name is too long...
change the filename.... etc.

I assume this is because of the way we have our files structured on the hard
disk that the various sub folders down the tree add to the length of the
filename. The path from the root directory to the actual file is so long
that windows refuses to copy the file over. Is there a way around this
situation? . I started trying to shorten file names and redo the file
structure of the folders, but it is becoming a much bigger job backing
things up than what I was hoping for.

We are operating Win98SE on P3 machines.

Thanks for your assistance on this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Gord
