Sometimes when opening my documents, or a word doc, or
lotus organizer, the system does not respond. I press
ctrl/alt/del and see "msgsrv32 (not responding)." It
happens at various times, so there appears to be no
pattern to it. What is msgsrv32? Can it be removed? why
does it keep causing the problem? I am running windows98
SE, Office97, Lotus Organizer97. I have Norton Anti-Virus
corporate edition and virus definitions are up to date.
I've run virus scans, none detected. The hard-drive and
motherboard have also both been replaced in the past two
weeks in an attempt to cure this problem, but with the new
hardware in, i am still encounteriung the exact same
errors. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

.......Start...of quote of Starbuck......
MSGSRV32 is not causing the trouble. It is only the little program
that delivers error messages to the screen. It is mentioned because it
was trying to tell you something was wrong at the moment when Windows
hung.
The mention of MSGSRV32 does suggest that the problem might be fairly
serious -- that is, serious enough to freeze the system. Obviously,
something changed just before you began to get this error message. You
need to figure out what changed. Did you recently install new
hardware? If so, uninstall this hardware. To uninstall software, use
Device Manager. Or did you recently install new software? If so,
uninstall this software. To uninstall software, use the Add/Remove
module in Control Panel.
Then, run the System File Checker. Go to Start/Run and enter "sfc".
SFC will verify the integrity of your Windows files.

........Start of quote of Nutcase.......
Msgsrv32.exe is the messenger file, and it's not the problem. This file
carries instructions from one part of your machine to another. It is
reported as "not responding" because one of two things has happened:
1) A program sent an invalid instruction or
2) A program failed to respond to or correctly interpret an instruction.
The tough part is figuring out "Which program?". Begin by limiting the
number of applications you run at startup, including your Anti-virus
program
(frequently one of the worst offenders with some of the more widely
recognized commercial products). Slowly increase the numbers over a
period
of days until the errors start to reoccur. This should give you some
idea of
what is causing the problem.
Once you know what is causing it, addressing it may be a bit easier.
