"My Computer" and "Windows Explorer" freeze up
Posted by Dee Von on November 2nd, 2003

Today I started having a problem with "Windows Explorer"
and "My Computer" freezing up on me. Also, while in IE
6.0, if I try to use the drop-down arrow on the Address
(url) bar, it locks me up. When I do a Cntrl-Alt-Delete
to check what is causing it, it says that Explorer is not
responding. I just started having this problem today.

I am able to get into Windows Explorer and My Computer
while in safe mode, but not in regular mode.

I have noticed in the past week that while sending out
messages in Outlook Express, I get the sending message box
on the bottom right, but my computer is frozen until the
message is sent, which does take awhile. I thought it
might be because I scan all my outgoing messages with
Norton Antivirus, but after disabling that, OE still takes
a long time.

I did download an update this morning for IE 6.0 for a
sound issue, however, I later read that if you are not
having that problem, you don't need the download. Could
that have caused this mess?? Is my OE problem the same
issue as the Explorer and My Computer lock-up?

Please help.

TIA

Although somehow I've always survived it, yes, Windows Update can cause
a mess, even when the critical is really called for. Was IE freezing as
you navigated sites or clicked Back/Forward? I never took "Internet
Explorer Navigation Sound Update", which I suppose is the one at issue.
It's "Read more" says it cannot be uninstalled. Anyway...

(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"
It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install is
indicated.

(2) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.
NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more
than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows
Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.

PCR,

Thanks for your advice, but unfortunately. I'm still
locking up. I can navigate within IE as long as I use th
Back/Forward option, but if I type anything in the address
box, it freezes.

I also could not use the Find Files or Folders feature, as
that locked up, too. I had to go to Run, and then typed
in the path to the IE6Setup file.

Do you think I should do a dirty install of Win98?

Thanks again,

The strangest thing has happened!! I printed out your
instructions to someone else who is having problems with
Explorer freezing up. I did a little browsing using IE,
and used the Back/Forward buttons.

I can now open Windows Explorer and My Computer without it
freezing up. Also, my CD drive is visible now.

I'm concerned because I didn't do anything else to the
computer. Any ideas on this apparently intermitent
problem??

Thanks again,

You didn't say whether you actually ran IE6Setup. Anyway, perhaps the
download you took, or the running of IE6Setup, were waiting for you to
do something additional that would cause it to initialize something or
other. I have noticed quirky behavior after taking the latter day large
critical updates that just eventually went away on it's own...

(a) Mouse pointer jumping around or to side of screen.
(b) Right speaker not speaking.

I did tons of things to cure them, but I suspect they just went on their
own after a quirk was worked out. Anyway, keep your eye on it. Also,
clean up your Startup Group, & do a full system backup.

Thank you for your help. I'm at work right now, but will
try it again when I get home. My problem is not fixed,
though, because after I shut the computer down, and got
back in, I had the same locking up problem. I found that
if I open IE first, then go to Explorer or My Computer,
that they open without much of a problem, the exception is
that one of my extra drives was not showing.

So, it seems to be fairly okay as long as IE is up and
running.

By the way, I did do a reinstall of IE6Setup that was
currently located on my hard drive.

Here are further possibilities...

(1) The mouse & keyboard are the ones with moving parts, & they are
"hooked", meaning tasks will run each time you touch one. Therefore,
with the computer off, unplug the mouse & hold by it's tail until it may
stop spinning & squawking. Also, open & clean the ball & rollers. That
is not a design you may see on the rollers-- it is a band of dirt
running round the center! Also, unplug the keyboard, turn it round &
spank it.

(2) If disabling your virus checker's auto-"System" scan, using it's
Tray button, leaving the other types on, gives immediate & dramatic
relief, I have further info. This supposedly applies to Scan Engine
4.1.60.

(3)

So, if you have "Find Fast", try disabling that.

(4) For sluggishness in navigating folders: Open Explorer, R-Clk My
Documents in the left pane, & select Properties. How many folders
does it contain? If it is around 100, try moving them out. Reboot. Is
your sluggishness gone?

(5) First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a
combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a
permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in
it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is
configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.

Thanks a bunch for your great advice! Especially about

several reboots. I'm keeping my fingers (and toes)
