is my problem caused by WINOA386.MOD?
Posted by Jim Wray on February 17th, 2004

I just had to rebuild my Win98SE system from scratch. This box is being used
as a proxy/firewall for my home network. I installed win98 and then win98SE
as usual with no problems. I then installed Winproxy and got everthing to
working as it should. This box has 2 NIC cards - one talking to the cable
modem and the other talking to the internal network. During the process of
setting things up I had occasion to shutdown and reboot the box several
times with nary a problem.

Not being one to let well enough alone, I went through the Windows update
process and installed all of the security updates except the one for IE6.
Now, when I shutdown the box I get the win32 dialog box message: YOU MUST
QUIT THIS PROGRAM BEFOIRE YOU CAN QUIT WINDOWS - CLICK OK TO QUIT THE
PROGRAM AND WINDOWS. I click OK and after several seconds the PROGRAM NOT
RESPONDING dialog box pops up so I click END PROGRAM and then the original
YOU MUST QUIT... message appeqrs again, I press OK, several seconds elapse,
the PROGRAM NOT RESPONDING dialog box pops up, I select END PROGRAM for the
second time and the box then shuts down normally.

Through trial and error I have found that if I kill the WINOA386.MOD
processes (there are two of them running), the box will shutdown normally. I
did not have this problem when I set up the system for the first time
several months ago. and I didn't have the problem this time until the
updates were installed. What does WINOA386.MOD do and would it have anything
to do with the NIC cards which did in fact give me some grief trying to get
them installed...is their presence a function of the something in the update
or am I misleading myself?

I can't find anything on the web about this problem and am hoping one of the
experts here might be able to help or point me in the right direction.

many thanks for any feedback.

"Winoldap" in Win9x is WINOA386.MOD, in the Windows\System folder.
It is a support file used to run DOS-based programs under Windows...."old apps". It
should load when the DOS program is running, and should close when it is done. The
DOS program may be poorly written, or not closing normally, and that is leaving
Winoldap open, not responding, or causing a conflict. Try to find what DOS-based program is
responsible.

Thanks for the feedback. The only things running on this box are Win98 SE
and Winproxy...as far as I can tell there are no running DOS programs. Could
drivers be considered as "DOS programs"? I ask because, as I mentioned
earlier, there are two NIC cards in the box and I did have some difficulty
getting them installed...might I have installed "dos drivers" for these
cards - that would explain the two instances of winoa386.mod?

thanks

Does "WINOA386.MOD" show up immediately after boot? Then, examine your
Startup Group for a DOS app...

"START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup Programs".

If you don't see it, then use the Edit menu to select all & copy, & post
it. (Edit the output & put spaces between the lines before posting.)

Also, "START, Run, SysEdit", & post Autoexec.bat.

Some DOS app is running in the background.
Start>Run>msinfo32, check the 16-bit modules running, and applications running.

I also suggest a clean boot for troubleshooting:

Gentlemen...thanks for your help. I hate it when this happens but the
problem no longer exists and I have no idea why but I'm not going to argue
with success. Winproxy seems to have, presumably on its own, changed the way
it operates...it doesn't even show up in the task list now when you select
CTRL/ALT/DEL...the only thing there is explorer. Winproxy is running just
fine and keeping the virii at bay and my network invisible to the outside
world.

You won't get an argument from me, either. It is possible for a Windows
app to open a DOS box. NetZero will do it when I click... search, I
thought (but not this time). Anyway, perhaps it is so with Winproxy as
well.
