- No Sound on W98
- Posted by Katie on February 5th, 2004
I don't hear any sounds on my PC, can anyone give me some advice as to places to check for the problem? The last time this happened, it was some sort of setting somewhere. Thanks in advance

I dunno... This would depend on just what sounds or all sounds that you are
missing.
Maybe look at the control panel>multimedia? Control panel>sounds? Control
panel>desktop themes?
Look in the Add/remove programs>windows setup tab>multimedia? You might
check those locations to see if the sound/volume control/sounds are enabled.
If they are, you might want to disable them, apply/ok your way out, and then
return to the settings dialog you just disabled and re-enable it. Apply/OK
your way out again, and see what results.

Do you still have the speaker icon in the system tray in the
lower right next to the time?
I know it might be silly, but make sure it's not muted. Just a
thought!

the only thing I see by the time that would possibly apply is the volume icon. I deleted Media Player and Outlook Express from my PC, I wonder if that could be the reason? I am pretty sure the problem occurred before I deleted these from my PC, but it is a thought. How would I get that icon and put it by the time?
- Posted by Katie on February 5th, 2004
Thank you for your suggestion, I had not thought of that.

Hi Katie,
As has been suggested for the speaker volume icon in the Systray (containing
the clock), you will need to go to the control panel>Multimedia>"show volume
control on taskbar" and put a checkmark there. You will also need to go to
the Add/remove programs>windows setup tab> and (if necessary un-install and
again re-install the volume control which is a component of the Multimedia
element that is listed therein. To see if the volume control is enabled (or
any element of any main category for that matter) you must click on the
"Details" button. After the necessary components have been removed or
re-installed, you will click Apply> OK out.
To assign sounds to specific functions, go to the control panel>sounds: open
the Sounds Properties dialog box.
In Events, click the "event" to which you want to assign a sound.
In Name, click the sound you want to play whenever the selected event
occurs.
If the sound you want to use is not listed, click Browse.
You can also open the Sounds Properties dialog box by clicking Start,
pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and then double-clicking
Sounds.
By default, not all sound schemes are installed during setup. You can test a
sound by clicking its name, and then clicking the play preview button. The
sound stops when you click the stop button.
You can save your sound settings by clicking Save As and then naming the
sound scheme you created. The name you enter will appear in Schemes, so you
can easily use these settings later.
As a final note, never delete programs. The approved method of removing a
program is by the Add/remove programs control, or by using the un-install
executable that is often supplied with the program itself. Not all programs
have this feature, but many (most) do. If the program is not listed in the
Add/Remove programs box, nor on the menu which has the program in the
start>programs list, then try the folder in which the program is actually
located in (usually) the C
rive. Use the un-install file that may be shown
there.

Also check the speakers are powered up at the mains and

Have you been having problems hearing recently.
Also try checking your volume controls and making sure every
thing is checked and at max volume (long shot).

Actually doing this, right click speaker icon in system tray and select
open volume controls, you should 'see' a bar with a green line
on it if any sound is being sent to the speaker out put.

Thank you for your great help. I am a beginner (sort of) and sometimes I just don't understand things. Your suggestions are very clear and I will try all of them. Thank you again.

What do you mean when you say make sure your speakers are powered up at the mains?
- Posted by Katie on February 6th, 2004
I am going to do this as soon as I send this. For some reason, this seems like a HUGE chore to me--I guess it is dragging out the hardware from the PC cabinet
Per your previous post, I am not hard of hearing but sometimes I do hear something differently than what was said. It can be awfully funny.

Lots of speaker systems have a separate power cord , to plug into the wall ,
for there own powered amplifier, and only get the signal from the pc, Guess is
they wanted to make sure that the 'oops' options were checked as well

Some speaker are sort of 'built into' your computer whilst some (like mine)
have their own seperate power supply.
I assume yours are build into your monitor? In which case they will get
power
from the monitor and not have a seperate power supply (or on off button)
like mine.

cabinet.
OK sometimes I am not to serious, but try this.
First play a mp3 on your computer, then:-
Click the 'Start' button.
Select 'Run' and type "sndvol32.exe" into the box (and slick 'OK')
You should then get a "Volume Control" box.
It should have about 7 'slider bars' on it, if it doesn't:-
Click 'Options' and then 'properties'.
Select 'Playback' then select all the boxes (tick 'em) where it says
"Show the follow......."
ie Mic, CD, Synth. etc...
Then click OK.
You should see one of the 'sliderbars' animated (green yellow and red lit
bar next to it),
probably the 'wave balance' one.
If its not 'animated' then I would not expect to hear anything. ( I am
stumped!!).
If it is animated then you should hear something. (check speakers)
Make sure all the 'select' boxes are ticked and you song has not finished!!.
Good luck, let us know what happened!.

My PC is old, about 8-9 years old. It is a Compaq Presario 972 and the speakers are built in.

Who is the 'us' you refer to. Are you not just a regular PC user like me? Or do you work for Microsoft, etc. You are certainly smart.

By 'us' I meant the group in general, I am just a regular user really,
although
you might say I am smart, some might take opposite view!! (but they are
dumb!).
Was that of any help by the way?

Hi,
If what was suggested doesn't work this may help.
Do you have Norton Anti-Virus ?
My Wife has a Compaq and with Norton Anti-Virus active it killed the sound.
It was some time ago so I don't remember how I fixed it but if you
disable your Anti-Virus and you get your Sound back pop back here and
the regulars will know how to help you with it.
Sorry I don't remember how I fixed it but it was 5 years ago I did that.
Hope this helps.
