Non-Critcal Updates
Posted by Ryoko on March 7th, 2004

Hey, hey!

I've been checking up on the windows update site.
Nothing critical at the moment, no doubt, but what are...
"Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package"
&
"Root Certificates Update"

Could someone tell me how useful are they actually?
I don't want to fill up my HD since I need the space for recreation.

Thank you.

Neither one takes much space so I would take them. And why do I get the
distinct impression that "recreation" has just taken on a whole new meaning?

Recreation?
Oh, man...just what exactly were you thinking? *LOL

Let's just say I'm one of those weird people who
love to spend hours on an image editor...like Photoshop....

And then there are those newer renditions of classic games like
Prince of Persia, Broken Sword etc.

Thanks, George! ^_^

That's what I should be doing! But instead, I'm about to play not the new Prince of Persia (which I intend to obtain, however, but it wouldn't run on this PC anyway b/c I don't meet the hardware req's) - rather I am about to play Civilization. But guess which one? The original!!

Aw, geez.

How come I can't seem to find the classics...
And I don't wanna do the ebay thing again...

Actually, I looked for this on eBay as well, but could not find it there. I do have mine (well, not really mine) since 1992 or so. When you zip the whole game, it's a whooping 1.6 MB!!
Anyway, if you tell me that after your best efforts you could not find any place where to buy the game from, I'm willing to send it to you.

Really?!
Wow, that's so generous of you! ^_^

Thanks but I don't wanna impose on anyone.
Anyway, I'd rather scrape a knuckle than bother you.
I'll probably go pester at my old classmates to get me
the s/w. They're just a phonecall away... Heh heh heh...
Although 1.6MB may teeny for me, it's too huge for you.
I won't feel too good burning up your Intenet Access.

No worries, Ivan!

Well I could just put it on my web space and you could download it. Whatever you want. I don't think it's possible to get it these days except from somebody who already has it. Also, the last version (5) has some changes over the first one (1) in gameplay...

Both, together, are drops in the bucket. Less than that, really.

What are they? Well, do you see that little link by each update that says,
"Read More..."? <S>

I did click on "read more", and went through the articles about it...

"Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package" :
"Write caching" is a performance enhancement that is designed to increase
overall write speeds.

Hmm... Really? Where have I heard that before?
Anyway, my computer shuts down fine...

= & =

"Root Certificates Update" :
Adding additional root certificates to your computer enables a greater range
of security enhanced Web browsing, encrypted e-mail, and security enhanced
code delivery applications to work seamlessly.

So I can transfer sensitive data to doing some spying...wha?
Oh, and you can't uninstall it.

Anyway, Gary? I just needed opinions to back up with the info.
I've read through all that "Jargon", but I'm still a skeptic... :-/

Well, judging by your comments, perhaps you didn't read them very well?

IDE Write-Caching: The patch is to slow down the Shutdown procedure, to
account for already existing disk caching in combination with fast FSB and
CPU speeds--to make sure that IDE drives with large disk caches, in the form
of RAM that absorbs write commands until they can be executed, have time to
write all the commands out of cache to disk. Failure to finish writing out
what's left in cache before the power gets killed doesn't cause "shutdown
problems"--it causes data corruption. For such a tiny addition to the
system, it's fantastic insurance.

You use encrypted communications for lots of things--well, maybe you don't,
but lots of us do. It's used in online banking, online processing of
credit-card purchases, even online technical support--and a lot, lot more.
Root Certificates can be thought of as heavy-duty credentials--they are
intended to prove that whoever your dealing with is really who they say they
are, and to provide encryption/decryption keys.

I don't see where "opinions" enter into the discussion. You so-called
"Jargon" is where you need to focus, since it's obvious (to me, anyway) that
your lack of respect for "jargon", and the concomitant lack of effort to
truly understand it, has led you request "opinions" on matters of fact which
require none. Your questions are somewhat like asking, "They tell me that I
need a license to drive. What's your opinion?"

Well, if you intend to drive, you really ought to get one. If you don't
intend to drive, there's no need--but what if...?

In addition to what Gary has pointed out, I will add that some sites are not
available if your encryption level is not high enough.
