Nothing shows up on my screen when I turn on my computer!
Posted by Susie B. on July 12th, 2003

Can anyone tell me why my computer won't start up? When I
turned it on it just powered up (at least the fan came on)
but nothing showed up on the screen. It would not
automatically shut down before this happened, now it won't
even power up! When I hit the on button it tries to power
up but shuts back off. Has my hard disk crashed? Or has
the whole darned thing just gone and died on me? LOL
Any help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much.

This sounds like your motherboard's safety feature
is kicking in to protect the CPU from overheating.

What happens is that the system detects that
your CPU fan isn't coming up to speed fast enough,
either because the configuration is set too high,
or because the fan is kaput, and shuts down
to prevent you from burning up the CPU.

I believe the Volcano brand is somewhat
notorious for causing this problem.
