Outlook Express 6 freezing.
Posted by half_pint on March 3rd, 2004

I am using OE 6 on win98 version 6.00.2600.0000
Sometimes it locks up, no keyboard of mouse so
I have to reboot.
All my other programs work fine and it only seems to
happen when using OE so it seems to be OE specific.
It can happen when I am downloading messages or
writing a response.
I have no clue really, I added new memory and a mouse
recently but the problem seems to be only with OE.
Can I reinstall it? (easilly).

1. Read & heed all sections of
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm

2. v6.00.2600.000 is a terribly old and insecure version of OE (and IE).
Check in at Windows Update to install IE6-SP1. Reboot and return to Windows
Update for additional patches, including Q330994.

Well I went to windows update and it found no critical updates
or service packs. (I think I have service pack 1).
There was sone minor updates though which seem unlikely
to be of any use.
I have IE 6.02800.119615 SP 1 (q324929, q313829, q818529
q822925 q83294)
If it says I am upto date how can I have a very old version?

Wow that was impressive, I installed the minor updates and then
I went back to install another minor one which was to be installer
seperately.
Lo and behold now my machine needs a patch for a critical update
330994!!
So it seems my machine was secure but updateing it made it insecure.
I remember now why I gave up on mircosoft updates a long time
ago, they are a security hazard.
In future I will leave my machine open to the hackers, they would
appear to have more interested in having my machine functional
than microsoft do.
God knows what new problems this critical update will bring.
I will let you know if I am ever able to boot up my machine again.

Hey, hey.

A bit of [probably useless] info here.

You when you update and install the latest version of IE,
you can have the option of re-installing only OE.
(if it corrupts like mine just did)

Instead of choosing "Install Now - Typical set of components",
select "Install Minimal - or customize your browser".

The next screen will allow you to select which components
you would like to install.

Look under "Communication components" and
you will have your Outlook Express.

Cheers!

I didnt seem to have much choice in the matter, it just took over and
did what it wanted.

From your headers: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106.

I assume you hadn't yet installed Q330994 when you last posted and that you
are planning to do so.

Scan disk reported some errors, one in OE's data file, but
I suspect these are symtoms of frequent crashes rather than the
cause. However we will see.

1. Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of all
OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

2. If no joy, close OE. Find and delete Folders.dbx in your identity's
store. Consequences of doing so:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/store.htm#deldbx.

3. And if still no joy, your current Identity may be damaged, especially if
its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new
Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well,
import messages from the old Identity before deleting it
(File>Identities>Manage Identities).

4. If OE continues to crash, check for hijackware.

Maybe perhaps it was a dick problem as I have my OE files on drive d:
(which may not get scanned by a scandisk after a crashdown, or maybe i does?
I am not too sure.). I might just have been scanning c: and seeing no
errors.

I seem to remember the problem started *after* I disabled background
compacting, which I have now reenabled.

I will try the other stuff later if the problem persists. It's fairly
infrequent, but some times it has happened when I am typing in
a long post, which I lose, which is annnoying. I think this has
happened when I am off-line too.
Anyway I will wait for another crash before I proceed futher.

Thanks.

Prolly cos you didn't then compact manually. Suit yourself. I recommend
disabling Background Compacting and compacting manually, frequently.

Your upgrades/updates will have taken care of the "crash while composing"
problem.

I got a freeze today.
I never disabled compacting before and I had no problems.
Looks like I am back to square one.
I will try the various suggestions.
