It's tricky. F8 or Ctrl key do the job. But it has to be at just the right moment. Too early and it may prompt a keyboard error in BIOS, too late, well.... A more likely and sure solution is to use...

That's a Win98SE OEM CD. It will only install to a freshly formatted partition. First make sure the BIOS is well configured, especially that any anti-virus in the BIOS is disabled, then use a floppy...

No, I don't think Win98SE is any more stable than a fully updated Win98 "Gold". It has certain added functionalities, but if you don't need them, I wouldn't upgrade. More likely to cause problems...
