Random General Protection Fault Errors
Posted by Brian T. on February 15th, 2004

I keep getting random GPF errors and I don't know how to
fix this problem. The error is as follows:

(program) caused a general protection fault in module
KRNL386.EXE at 0001:00005868

(program) = EXPLORER, MSNMSGR, MSGSRV32, KERNEL32, MSTASK,
DW15

It blue screens out and I have to restart.

Anyone know what can be causing this?

I don't have a Win 98 CD to reinstall windows.

DW15 is probably an unwanted guest on your system, DownloadWare. Read about
it here:

You probably have other spyware, adware, BHOs and such unwanted guests on
your system as well. Get a copy of AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com,
install it, run it and load the latest updates, then scan your system and
clean everything it finds. Restart the system and run it again. Keep
running, cleaning and restarting until the system is clean.

You may also want to get a copy of CoolWeb Shredder since it targets one
specific pest that mutates rapidly:

Or not. It's DW15.EXE and not DW.EXE
Dw15.exe = Microsoft Application Error Reporting Tool
Found in the Internet Explorer folder amongst other places.
Perhaps a re-install of Internet Explorer with the anti-virus disabled will
solve the problem though.
