ReInstall Win98SE - no modem
Posted by George Richardson on February 2nd, 2004

Had to reinstall WIN98 SE. Existing modem won't reinstall. Have drivers but win insists on "Standard
Modem". Have even tried physically removing and changing slots. How can I make windows pick this up
as new hardware install factory drivers. Perhaps problem is in dialer section because it won't open
port and dial.

TIA
George

Don't let windows install the driver. Go to the manufacturers site and get the
latest updated driver and install it per the manufacturers instructions.

Thanks - But...
Windows wont let me! I have all drivers, including ones that allowed the modem to function properly
just a day ago despite failing performance in other areas. Windows claims its drivers are better
than the correct ones!

Any further thoughts

TIA

Check Device Manager for a "Network Adapters". That has to
be set right before the system will install the modem
right.
On my machine in Device Manager there are 3 entries that
need to be there for modem to work.
HCFMODEM
Modem
Network Adapters
If any of these are missing? Then modem will not work.

Start up in Safe Mode, go to device manager, remove any/all modem devices and reboot. When Windows redetects the modem do not let it install the drivers, place a tic for "Search for a better driver.....".
If you have the drivers on a floppy, place a check next to "Floppy disk drives", if you have them saved to your drive select "Specify a location" and type in the path or browse to where the file is located and click next.
Sometimes it gets a little tricky when installing and will mention that it can not find a file. What you need to do in this case is a find on the directory for that file to locate it, then you can point it to that folder to install the file.

Thanks for the help. Before the day was out the motherboard blew up and entire computer, except for
hard drives, is being replaced. Perhaps problems were hardware dying all along. Again, Thanks
