Rt. Click "Send To Desktop" shortcut feature lost
Posted by Star on July 16th, 2003

Hi Everyone,

I have *lost* the shortcut icon for the "Send To Desktop" feature. The shortcut is no longer in my C:\Windows\SendTo folder and I have not been able to restore it. Is the target file in C:\Windows\System, can someone pls. tell me where this target file is so I can replace the shortcut.

Thank you kindly,

Karen

Hi Alan,

No, do not have Power Tools installed on my 98-SE system.

This is a registry fix that I need? I had been looking for a target file in
C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System, but in fact, this is a registry key and not
a shortcut, wow!

Do you know how I can get a reg. fix merge file that will fix it or add it
back to my registry?

Thank you for helping me.

Karen

Please do not post in HTML.

See if this helps, particularly if you have installed the Win95
PowerToys.

There is a conflict with the Send to Desktop but that can be fixed
from here:

PowerToy "Send to X" Fix. Win98 If you install the "Send to X" Win95
PowerToy on Win98, you may lose the "Send to Desktop" feature. This
reg file restores it.

Gary,

I visited the links Alan gave me and I went to Ron's site, but the only
"SendTo" fix that I found was to fix the breaking caused by Power Toys. I
viewed the merge fix w/Notepad and appears to only fix the Power Toys
problem/issue. Maybe I overlooked another fix for the problem on the web
sites.

I went to KB and searched, found article 191882, but when I navigate to the
Windows/SendTo folder and click new text document, I am not given the option
to type "Desktop as Shortcut.DESKLINK and click yes.

This has been somewhat frustrating and I guess my registry key for this
feature is corrupted.

Thanks for helping me.

Karen

You create a New Text file in the folder, and change its name to "Desktop as
Shortcut.DESKLINK", and you're not *allowed* to? I would expect a warning that
asks if you're sure you *want* to, to which the answer is Yes, but not *allowed*
to? That would only make sense if the file already exists. Does it?

This should have no bearing on your being able to create the file itself, but
yes, there should be a key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for .Desklink (<dot>DESKLINK),
and it should point to other keys that actually describe the actions to be
taken. If those are messed up, I'm sorry, I can't help you until this evening or
tomorrow, when I will be building a Win98 system and have the information I need
in front of my (I don't have a Win98 machine up and running at this moment.)

If you are still having problems this evening (Pacific time), email me and I
will send you the entire Registry chain in a REG merge file. I'll even send you
the necessary file, though I still don't get what's going on in that department.

Hi Gary,
No, I receive no error message, and I can and have renamed the New Text Doc.
many times to Desktop as Shortcut.DESKLINK. When I rt. click on a file to
use it, I don't receive any error message and I don't receive the message
confirming a the placement of the file on the desktop that should happen.
Nothing at all happens, the item is just non functional.

I downloaded several fixes off websites and opened them w/Notepad and I
opened my registry and followed to all the keys and entries that were in
the merge fix files. Ref. entries to Power Toys and I knew they couldn't be
the default values for Win-98. I'm learning, George sent me sometime back a
merge to fix thumbnail view in Explorer, I guard that fix. But I checked
and followed those entries in my registry too.

*****
I can do a reg. search for *Desklink*, If I find it the values are
probably wrong and I don't know the correct entries should be. I will wait
for for you to copy the default values for me. No rush at all pls., just
whenever, even next wk. is OK w/me I know how to put files on the desktop
without SendTo folder feature.

Thanks for helping me,

Karen
