That is guaranteed to eventually corrupt your system.
You could even lose your hard drive doing that.

Start => Run => Type MSCONFIG => Press [Enter]
Click the "Advanced" button

Remove the checkmark against the option
"Disable ScanDisk after bad shutdown"

Hugh, I am having the same problem & when I went to the location you give
below, there is no checkmark in the option "Disable ScanDisk after bad
shutdown". The only time I have turned my computer off using the power
button is when my computer froze & that was the only way to get back up &
running. Any suggestions ?? Thanks,
Michelle the 2nd

Scroll-up [if necessary] and highlight your C drive
to display the contents of the Root directory.
Left-click on MSDOS.SYS once to highlight it.
Now hold down a Shift key and right-click on MSDOS.SYS
Select "Open with...", scoll down and double-click Notepad.
Look for an entry which reads "AutoScan=0"
If you find one, go here and follow the instructions on
"How to Edit the Msdos.sys File"

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 118579
Contents of the Windows Msdos.sys File
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;118579

Change the entry to read "AutoScan=2"

Hugh, when I "Right-click the Start button, the Explore button is not
hi-lighted" & i.e. can not be opened??

Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on your hard drive.
Same thing.

Thanks Hugh, I have made this change to the MSDOS.SYS file, (changed the
entry "AutoScan=2"; it was set to =1. Hopefully I will not have a crash for
some time to test this. Thanks Again,
Shell

You right click the Start button but cannot select "Explore".
You had ScanDisk set to run after a bad shutdown,
but there is no checkmark in the option
"Disable ScanDisk after bad shutdown".
You had ScanDisk set to run after a bad shutdown,
but it doesn't run.

Something is not quite copacetic here.

===============================================
AutoScan=Number
Default: 1
Purpose: Defines whether or not ScanDisk is run after a bad shutdown.
A setting of 0 does not run ScanDisk;
1 prompts before running ScanDisk;
2 does not prompt before running ScanDisk
but prompts you before fixing errors if any errors are found.
