- Screen Saver on Desktop
- Posted by Howard Kapnic on November 4th, 2003
Is there any way to put an icon on the desktop to invoke
the screen saver? I would like to prevent unauthorized
access to my system without modifying the delay time in
the PROPERTIES function.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi,
Screen savers or .scr files are executables and will launch/open when
clicked.
Yes, you can put a shortcut on your desktop or in your Start menu.
Do a find for the files...
Note: you will find the files either in the Windows folder or the
Windows/System folder.
When the file you want is located, right click and send a shortcut to your
desktop.

Thanks for the response. I created the shortcut OK but
when I click on it, nothing happens. Does it matter if
the screen saver is password protected?

Howard,
I have never applied a password protection to a screen saver.
I would suggest removing it.
Go in to Display properties (RT CLICK ON DESKTOP, CHOOSE PROPERTIES) and
choose screen saver tab and remove the password protection.
This can also be done in the Control Panel, choose Passwords and I'm
positive that *Other Passwords* is for Windows Screen Savers.
After you have password protection removed, re-do your shortcut to your
desktop for the choosen screen saver and it should work
Let me know if you are successful!

Hello Howard,
I have r_ead both your query and Karen's responses.
If I understand you correctly, you wish to prevent access
to your computer by using the screen saver password
function but that you wish to active it from_ the Desktop.
First, ensure that you have set the screen saver
password. Go: Start/Settings/Control
Panel/Display/Screen Saver and select any screen saver and
then CHeck the box "Password protected". Next to that
click on the button you will see called "Change..." to set
the password/OK/OK.
Then browse to C:\Windows\System and select your desired
screen saver. These files are file ended .scr. Right-
click on it and from the resulting_ list, click to make a
shortcut of it. The shortcut should appear with the
word "Shortcut of..." at the bottom of the list of files
in that folder (Windows\System). Select the SHORTCUT file
you made and click "Cut". Then go to C:\Windows\All
Users\Desktop and "Paste" it in there.
It should then appear on your Desktop and it should ask
for the password.
The above paths apply to my system. I have followed the
above instructions myself to test it out and it worked.
The screen saver did ask for the password.

Hope that helps.
Best of luck.
