Shortcut (link) to Fonts folder in Control Panel
Posted by Richard Roseweir on August 5th, 2003

Am reposting with different words...to keep my inquiry up front and
alive in the hopes that a workable solution will be forthcoming. I have
been unable to help myself in this regard.

Am using Windows 98 SE and am wanting to know if it is at all possible
to delete and re-create an existing "faulty" shortcut (link) in the
Control Panel?

I'm needing to know whether I can somehow delete the link to the Fonts
folder and then re-create it all fresh and shiny new...say from the
original Windows CD-ROM or whatever?

Once open, the Fonts folder works as expected.

All interest and assistance is highly appreciated.

The link to the Fonts folder is actually main.cpl and it is shared with
the Mouse and a few others. I am able to differentiate between these
various Control Panel applets by using an extension as follows
"main.cpl,fonts". You can test this by using Start > Run > and typing
"control.exe main.cpl, fonts" or simply "control fonts" (sans quotes) and
clicking OK. The Fonts folder will then open as before.

Now to your suggestion: For the Fonts folder, which applet_name.cpl do
I search for and extract from the Win98 folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM
and to where do I restore it?

Many, many thanks for your interest. Am starting to become hopeful
again.

The icons/shortcut's in the control panel are .cpl files, located in
your
Windows folder.

To replace them, you will need to have your Windows CD handy.

Go to Start > Run, type: sfc

Select the option to restore a single file, and point the "Restore From"
location to: D:\WIN98 (where D is your cd-rom drive letter).

you should search for main.cpl and restore it to it's current location on
your hard drive.

Thank you gentleman both. It's all about being up to your waist in
alligators and forgetting about draining the swamp and not seeing the
forest for the trees and the fact that in Vancouver, the mountains are
always getting in the way of the views....

I extracted main.cpl to the C:\Windows\System folder and then shut down
the computer for a cold-start after 5 minutes. First action was to open
the Fonts folder from within Control Panel and BINGO....popped up first
time. Yipeee!!! It really takes so little to please me 'ay.

Will recheck remaining fonts against Windows 98 SE minimal and default
install, but am sure that my first review has provided for all. Now only
time will tell if the Fonts folder fix is permanent...shall see in the
next few days. Thanks again, this group rules !!!
