- Start/Settings/Control Panel

I have Windows 98 SE.
Computer hangs up when I try to address the Control Panel.
I don't have a problem with the other options.
The computer industry is the biggest rip-off this country
has ever know.
Microsoft won't answer unless you pay them and/or pay the
long distance fee.
There are over 280 pages of problems which appear in this
section, about 20 to a page; over 5,000 errors or
problems.

I feel for you, buddy.
Have you tried checking if all your peripherals such as
cameras, scanners and etc. are connected?

Are you getting error messages or does it just not respond?
Please post the exact error message if you are seeing one.
Someone here will help you for free. Everybody knows
Windows isn't perfect, so there's no point in hashing that
out. Take advantage of the free help here, most of us
don't work for Microsoft, but are just trying to help out
other people.
Don't post your real email address in any newsgroups, they
are harvested by spammers and you are likely to get a
bunch of spam and viruses sent to you.

Extract a new copy of RUNDLL32.EXE from either your Windows 98 CD or from the CAB files on your hard drive, whichever you have, to the Windows folder, using the "Extract one file" option of System File Checker (SFC).
Other things to check:
Click Start>Find>Files or Folders.
In the "Named" box, type:
*.cpl
and in the Look In drop-down box, select the C: drive.
Click Find Now.
Maximise the window and click on the heading "In Folder" to sort the files by directory. Look at the files listed in the \Windows\System directory.
Double-click each file in turn...if some work, but one of the files gives you the error, that Control Panel file is corrupt.
To fix the error you must replace the .cpl file using the Extract one file option of System File checker (SFC).

If none of the .cpl files works and they all give the error, they may be disabled in the Registry, or the Control.exe file may be damaged or corrupted by a virus.
