Temporary Internet Files - message box "command" question
Posted by LuckyStrike on August 26th, 2003

If one manually explores within C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files, a
message box will pop up and state the following: "Running a system command
on this item might be unsafe. Do you wish to continue?" What does that
really mean, and why?

If you notice, double clicking a file in the \windows\cookies folder does
the same ;o)

it is there to protect you against any malicious content within the files
that are downloaded from website's you visit.

Steven,

Bizarre as it seems, if I D-click the cookies within C:\Windows\cookies
folder, the cookie(s) just open; No warning. Hmmmmm.

Now regarding the prevention of malicious content/script; that I can
understand to a degree, but since one has already "visited" that "site",
wouldn't the potential "damage" already be done?

So basically you're saying that Windows is trying to protect me from....me?
Is that it? And does your cookie folder differ from mine in it's warning
message or lack thereof? I'm running W98/se.

Looks that way.

As for the cookies folder, I get a warning message whenever I double click a
file in it (exactly the same message you've described), and I'm running 98se
on 5 machines here. Not sure why you aren't seeing one. Possibly a setting
in Windows I should imagine?.

Hi,
I've had the very same thoughts and questions on this too...?? Initially, when
I rec'd the dialog, "running a system command may be unsafe", I listened!!

I gave it further thought, and I chose to ignore it, and I did!! Since these
were files already exposed to my system... hence, IE minimized w/site up in my
browser. Now, I frequently do this, been doing this for many yrs.

Thanks for this post, because this is still another query I had about the very
strange TIF folder. I appreciate the explanation, but any potential damage would
already be done?

Maybe someone would care to expand on this?

Karen

Yeah, you're welcome Karen; There are some many mysteries in the unfolding
adventures of PC "warfare" I can barely keep up; correction; I can't keep up
with it. BTW, what do you mean by "...hence, IE minimized w/site up in my
browser"? Sorry, I've had a long day and I am not that sharp.

Anyway, I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of one thing eventually. ;-)

Hmmm..... as Steven replied, my reply too....

- If I open the *Cookies folder* and open one of the .txt cookie files, they are
merely text files, mine open w/no "running a system command may be unsafe dialog
box.
- Now, regarding the *TIF*, if I click to open the cookie, I do get the message,
and. I continue and Notepad opens the file.
- But note, the flavicon's are *very different* ? If, I click to open and ignore
message, IE opens, real strange w/the flavicon icon and if you choose
properties, it's merely an icon file ?

-Ok, I've browsed to a website, I simply mean I minimize my IE to the taskbar.
I manually go to the TIF, I not only *open* these files, but I copy them,
usually this will be a midi file. I'm on the site, they've downloaded to me, my
machine has/is exposed to the potential danger is all I mean. Sorry, I try hard
to be clear, but sometimes I'm not.

Pls. note these files are .JPEG's usually or midi's. Now if these were
executables, I would not open them even if I didn't get the "running system
command"message. I too am running, 98SE and have done this on all Windows OS
except 3.1. I too am surprised at Pa Bear's comical response, he's an MVP and I
wish he would of explained the potential danger.

One reason, this query is strictly knowledge based.... this is a busy ng and
they are trying hard to help user's with slight to extremely severe problems, I
understand this.

Karen

Hi Karen,

OK. The same for my setup.

OK. and the same as above.

I'll have to look.OK, it depends on whether I choose to "Open" it or "Open
in a new window". If I "open" the "unsafe command" appears; if "open in a
new window" the favicon opens w/o the "unsafe command" both then access IE.

My comments continue in-line below:

OK. Now that is clear.

That's a sensible approach insofar as .exe and the like are concerned.

Yeah, it would have been an asset to have a more clearcut reply. But then
again, the inplied answer seems to have a distinct leaning to an avoidance
of opening them from that location. Again why has not been satisfactorily
answered in my view. The humorous aspect was, well...quite humorous though I
must say.

One gets a wide ranging variety of responses, and respondents in this (or
any) NG.

Same back at you, ;-)
