Udates Hosed My PC
Posted by jeff on August 3rd, 2003

I downloaded and installed the updates to Win 98 and I.E.
When I restart(ed) my PC my desktop icons are gone and I
get the message:

EXPLORER
This program has performed an illegal operation and will
be shut down

If problem persists, contact the program vendor.

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module
SHOC4O1.DLL at 0187:500054B2
Then list registers Bytes and Stack Dump

Needless to say, I am quite unhappy that Microsoft's
downloads/updates have totally hosed my PC. I'm hoping to
avoid having to rebuilt/reload all software/hardware.

Any help will be greatly appreciated ... Thanks in
advance, Jeff

1. See my article, "CLEAN BOOT -- What it is and why you need it."
If using a newsreader:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/%23q4I1q...TNGP12.phx.gbl
If using an internet browser:
http://www.google.com/groups?selm=%2...GP12.phx. gbl

2. Start your machine and hold down the Ctrl key (sometimes F8 works better) or
repeatedly press it, the critical time being right at the end of the POST
period, just as Windows starts to load. With luck, you will get a Startup Menu.
Choose Command Prompt Only. At the C:\> prompt, run the following commands,
hitting <enter> at the end of each line:

smartdrv
scanreg /restore

Choose the most recent backup available. If it is older than a week or two,
forget it and cancel.

Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot. If that doesn't get you back in, and online, restart
with the Startup Menu, then choose Safe Mode. Uninstall IE if possible.
Otherwise, try IE Repair. Or, in the Start, Run box, run the following:

regsrv32 /i shdoc401.dll

If none of this works, post back. If something finally gets you back into
Windows, use the suggestions found in my article, and try again. This time, do
one update at a time, starting with IE6.
