- USB Version question
- Posted by Dean on August 11th, 2003
Hi,
I have an HP 4535 computer running Win98se and I want to
add an external CD burner. How do I tell what USB version
I have (1.1 or 2.0)? And if it is 1.1, can I upgrade it to
2.0?
Thanks,
Dean

If you have your spec sheet or manual that came with your
system, you might find the answer there; otherwise, your
best bet is to check HP's web site and look for your
system specs there.
As for upgrading your existing 1.1 to 2.0, it may not be
possible due to differences in the design of USB 2.0. The
only possibility that I see is if your USB was originally
a 2.0 version, but has a firmware of 1.1. (A couple of
months before 2.0 was officially standardized, certain
motherboard companies (i.e., ASUS and Abit) had USB 2.0 on
certain products, but released them as 1.1 with a note
stating that a firmware update will be available on their
web site as soon as 2.0 has been officially released.)
The only way to upgrade to 2.0 is to buy a PCI add-in card.
Hope this helps!
