- weird font issue
- Posted by on January 21st, 2004
I'm not sure what my son did to his Win98 computer, but
the text in certain windows is ghost-like and can only be
read after manipulating. For example, in a maximized
folder window, the folder title text is greyed out and can
only be read after reducing the folder size. At that
point, it becomes black and the folder can be maximized
and the heading still readable. In IE, certain text can
only be read after highlighting (click and drag) If text
cannot be highlighted, such as in installation windows,
there is no way to read it. The affected text are usually
titles or headings.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Steve

Have you tried Control Panel-Display-Appearance tab?

I've gone in there, but everything looks normal. He's
changed his schemes a lot, but I've changed it back to a
Windows default scheme. Could it be a memory issue?

Steve,
I am not sure that a memory issue would cause that.
Perhaps a video card problem?
It wouldn't hurt to make a post to
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...isplay.general
to see if the display gurus have any idea.

been there, done that...
there are no font options (type or color) in the active window (at least
from Display/Properties/Appearance)
Is this controlled somewhere else? I even tried folder Properties, but no
luck...

There should be font options.
There is the item: Window (with colour for the background and colour
for the font)
There is the item: Icon (with font size and type)
Icon controls some window text as well as the names under an icon.
I cannot see that it can be controlled anywhere else.

Alan,
In Win98, when you open a desktop folder, and right click inside the open
window, you have an option to "view: as web page". That puts a folder title
on the upper left side of the window, and the files on the right. It is
that folder title that is a series of dots that appear as normal letters
after I resize the window. (Occasionally it opens normally). The problem
also appears headings in certain Windows Help pages, and can be fixed by
highlighting the affected area. Same solution for certain IE pages.
However, when it occurs on headings in installation boxes, or in displays in
certain programs (i.e., Quicken graphs for example) those cannot be
highlighted, so they remain illegible (just a series of dots.)
Unfortunately, it is intermittent, which is why I thought somehow memory was
involved. Can Active Desktop be an issue here?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Sorry, but I don't (and won't) use View as Web Page and know
absolutely nothing about it.

Just two guesses...
(1) "Control Panel, Display, Settings tab, Advanced button".
What is in the "Font Size" window? If it is "Other", then try
"Large/Small" instead. (If you are 1024x768, better make that "Large".)
(2) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Accessibility button".
Try the various options there.

Thanks or Good Luck,

Naturally, you will not sue,

The problem remains even when view as web page is unchecked. As I mentioned
before, it also shows up in some Windows Help headings and on some IE pages.

Can you be specific?
Can you narrow it down to specific Help headings (and which pane in
Help if chm help and specific text on specific web pages?
Supply details I can see and I can look and see what controls them.
I am using Win98 SE +IE6 SP1. Supply details of yours in case it makes
a difference (it probably won't)
