Windows 98 SE Reinstall Problems
Posted by Sharon on July 17th, 2003

In trying to resolve an IE 6.0 explorer problem (IE would
not launch), I uninstalled IE 6 and reinstalled IE 6 (I
thought!). In the process, I inadvertantly reinstalled
Windows 98 SE without first uninstalling Windows 98 SE.

I now have a huge headache as I can tell by the facts that
a) my system is becoming unstable (wierd things happening)
and b) the version shown for Windows is "98" and not "98
SE. It would seem that I have a mish-mash of these two
Windows programs. The research I've done has only
confused me further because of so much conflicting
information.

Have I completely ruined my system to the point that I
would have to start from scratch? Or is there a way to
uninstall and reinstall the programs that will solve the
problem? Before I had the IE problem, I was running
Windows 98 SE with MS Office 2000 (using Outlook and not
Outlook Express) on a DELL PC. Below is my general
information system information:

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
Upgrade using Full OEM
CD /SrcDir=D:\WIN98 /IQ /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
IE 5 6.0.2800.1106
Uptime: 0:02:31:41
Normal mode
On "Z6R7H4" as "Sharon A. Cleveland"
GenuineIntel Pentium(r) III Processor
256MB RAM
42% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (30864MB free)
Available space on drive C: 30864MB of 35760MB (FAT32)

I hope this posting isn't too long.

My bet is that you need to do a clean install. But let's see if someone else
has an alternative solution.

"Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A" is Second Edition.

(1) Before going any further, do a full system backup, or at list backup
your critical data files and raw downloads.

List of backup apps.

(2) I wonder what it looks like in "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu,
Version Conflict Manager".

(3) Have you gone to Windows Update?

(4) Colorado might be right about that.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
