- Device double entry
- Posted by Roger Simpson on April 18th, 2004
I installed W98SE for my new motherboard with onboard USB.
When booting I have 2 occurences of PnP detection for USB
1.1. Also 2 Host Controller entries and 2 Root Hub Device
entries for USB 1.1. (With USB 2 I get just 1 of each.)
It's as if there are two devices for 1.1
I'm sure this is why my 1.1 devices don't work. But if I
remove one with Dev Man, it just get detected again and
asks for driver.
Please help, or tell me what to read.
Thanks, Roger.

Many new motherboard do have multiple controllers for USB devices so
this may be legitimate. Check your motherboard documentation for
details.
My current motherboard has 4 USB ports - 2 on each of 2 controllers
and both controllers are listed in Device Manager.
The best method of cleaning up duplicated entries in Device Manager is
to:
1. Boot the computer into Safe Mode. Items that are not fully
installed will show up in Safe Mode even if they are not listed when
the computer is running in Normal Mode.
2. Open Device Manager.
3. Browse through each category in Device Manager.
4. Delete every repeat every instance of all of items that are
duplicated. EXCEPTION: "IRQ holder for PCI IRQ Steering" type entries
in the System Devices category can be legitimated duplicated and do
not need to be deleted.
5. Delete all device entries that show a conflict or error flag.
6. Delete every entry in the "other devices" category.
7. Shut down and restart normally. The computer will redetect those
deleted items that are legitimate and create the correct entries in
Device Manager. You may need to reinstall drivers for some items.
Good luck
