"Disk I/O Error" "Replace the disk, and then press any key"
Posted by lbrtchx@gmail.com on March 17th, 2008

I am trying to install Windows 98 as a way to then upgrade it to XP
on a box and it goes fine through the first installation phase, but
then I am getting:
~
"Disk I/O Error" "Replace the disk, and then press any key"
~
Someone recommended to me to use knoppix (knoppix.net) in order to:
~
check via dmesg that the disk are fine (which they were),
~
make sure you can mount then (I could just fine), and
~
run smartmoontools on it (i didn't report any problems from within
knoppix)
~
The BIOS is also see the ATA disk just fine. I even reset it to the
defaults and it does detect the drive just fine.
~
So what on earth is going on?
~
How can I solve this problem?
~
Thanks

You do not need to install Windows 98 to do the upgrade to Windows XP.
Just boot from the Windows XP install CD. When it says that it cannot
find a prior eligible version of Windows from which to upgrade, insert
the install CD for Windows 98 and point there to continue the upgrade
install of Windows XP.

What installation phase the Win 98 bit or the XP bit?

You shouldn't need to install 98, during the XP install it will ask for
a qualifying product, can either be 98 CD, or floppy disk 1 IIRC. You
put in the 98 media when asked and swap back when told.

Annoying silly little ~'s <snipped>.

Did you? You did other things that seem to be okay.

It's really the hardisk the error means and not the install media for
the OS?

Well it all started with....

Don't know, can't run any tests from here :-)

Have you tried just putting the 98 CDROM in when it gets to the point of
looking for another version of windows?

See method two:

http://www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/clean.htm

So after a reboot? What is the boot order in your BIOS?

Run a manufacturer's diagnostic tool to really know.

Most likely your partition table or boot sector is incorrect.
Delete any partitions, boot the XP CD to partition and format.

Just an idea: "replace disk and ..." usually refers only to
removeble media, specifically the floppy, or maybe a CD.

You dont need to install 98 if you want to end up with XP.
The XP install is happy to look at the 98 CD to verify that its upgrading that.

Just install XP from the start, and let it look at the 98 CD when it asks to do that.

What file system do yoiu have on the disk?
IIRC W98 can not be installed on an NTFS partition.

OK. There is something you are either assuming and/or I am missing
here:
~
This is what I am doing:
~
1. Using Linux' fdisk and set up the whole 40 Gb drive
~
2. then I am going "mkfs -t vfat /dev/hda1"
~
3. then I insert Win 98 installation CD and go through the first
steps.
After "Copying WIndows 98 files to your computer" the installation
comes to a "restartign computer" phase:
~
After rebooting Windows 98 gives you again the same options as if you
were trying to start all over again, namely:
~
1. Boot from HD
2. Boot from CD-ROM
~
If you go for 1. you will then land the error I mentioned
~
If you select 2. you will then prompted the three options:
~
1. Start Windows 98 setup from CD-ROM
2. Start computer with CD-ROM support
3. Start computer without CD-ROM support
~
So I get trapped in this installation loop
~
How do I get out of it?

As others have said, you don't need to (in fact the usual opinion is that an
upgraded-to-XP system is worse than a straight-to-XP system).

Probably the CD (or CD drive).
All sounds good advice/action. However, if you _are_ going to install '98,
make sure you only make FAT partitions - '9x can't read (or, I think, even
remove!) NTFS partitions. I don't know what knoppix makes by default.
(That's not foolproof - it means the drive electronics are responding,
saying "yes I'm a 40G drive"; it doesn't mean that the actual physical disc
is even going round. But we don't think that's your problem.)
