Error 1721...WIndows Installer problem...can I re-install windows?
Posted by Bob Hayden on August 30th, 2003

Hi all,

The last couple of weeks I've had some problems which are becoming
irritations.

When I have been trying to install some new anti-virus software I keep
getting an error 1721 saying there is a problem with Windows Installer.
Also, when I open and close IE6 I get an error about a problem in
SENS.DLL...I click to close the error box and my system tray icons in the
bottom right disappear and I get a white screen and need to Restore Actice
Desktop. Seems to function fine though. Minor attempts at fixing have proved
a failure so I am wondering if I should just re-install WIn 98SE from my CD.

Questions...I do not have recent backups and it is a pain to make them right
now, so would re-installing Win98SE destroy everyting on my hard disk or am
I ok? Do I need to move or rename any files such as E-Mails, Favorites, My
Document folder, etc.? Any advice is appreciated.

Reinstalling Windows 'over the top' of itself typically does no harm
to pre-existing programs or their data. But if you want to be safe
then, yes, do move your emails, my documents, ect. to another drive
for the time being.

If you don't have the latest Windows Installer then get it. If you
get 'this service already exists' error message when running it,
that means it has been installed at least once. To force it to
overwrite it's files and thus be 'reinstalled' anew, use these
switches on it to force that.

InstMsiA.exe /T:c:\msi\ /C
Thanks for the switches go to Symantec
