- help with an old game messing up the refresh rate
- Posted by SlickRCBD on December 7th, 2007
I just tried to run an old game, one that automatically goes to full
screen mode, and it promptly reset my resolution to the wrong refresh
rate such that about an inch of the display is off to the left. It
restores the screen when I quit. I remember there was a trick to deal
with this, besides messing up my monitor settings, but I don't remember
what it was. Could anybody help?

put finger to keyboard and composed:
If you have an LCD monitor, then it should be able to "learn" the new
settings. Just press the Auto button or whatever monitor menu
selection is appropriate.
Otherwise, if you have a CRT monitor, and if it is a DOS game, then
experiment with screen sizes of 25, 43 or 50 lines in the properties
of the .pif file.
Or type ...
mode co80,nn (where nn = 25, 43, or 50)
.... in the DOS window before launching the game.

loaned to me by a relative when I commented that I'd never played it or
the sequal. I tried getting properties on the program, but it doesn't
give me the option. Yes, I tried setting the screen size to all the
available options and color settings from 8-bit to 24-bit.
I'm using a CRT monitor and a 1ghz Dell optiplex GX110. The game Icewind
Dale II used to do this as well, but it let me edit an option in the
config files. Is there a similar option for Xcom?
