- Help with setting up cd burner
- Posted by 98remembered on February 27th, 2007
I am a ((((Mac)))) enthusiast - who is just now learning about the
OTHER computers.
In Mac, I put the cd-r into the box, and the OS does the rest for me.
Well - how do I do this with a Windows 98 unit?
I have installed a Lite-On cd-rw SOHR-5239S - the system treats it as
a play only cd. Nero can't see it - neither can CD Creator. Help????

Windows only sees the drive as a CD-ROM it is the burning software
(Nero) that detects that the drive is capable of wrighting to a disk.
From the Nero help file:
"Currently there are several hundreds or maybe even thousands of
different models of CD-ROM drives available on the market. Due to time
and availability limitations it's absolutely impossible to support
every available CD-ROM drive models. Nero already supports many
different CD-ROM drives but a support of all CD-ROM drives is simply
impossible.
For users of not directly supported CD-ROM drives, Nero offers the
menu command CD-Recorder -> Autodetect CD-ROM. Once a CD-ROM drive is
successfully detected by Nero, it may be used as input device for "on
the fly" copies or to save CD tracks. Nero's autodetection should be
able to detect most CD-ROM drives that are not directly supported."
There is more about autodetection in the help file lookk around a bit
for the procedure.

CD creator is worse - there's a model later than which the versions of the
Adaptec/Roxio software that will run on '98 won't recognise. (And Roxio have
no intention of upgrading the old versions.)
If you don't get anywhere with Nero, there are several others out there,
including several free ones: Burn4free (I thnk that's the spelling) seems to
cover the majority of CD (and DVD) drives, and can do most of what the
others can (certainly including multisession; I think it can't do packet
mode, i. e. using an RW as a giant floppy), with an easy interface.

Did a bit more digging and found that Nero uses a file named CDROM.CFG
to identify drives. You can get the latest version from the Nero FTP site:
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/CDROM.CFG
