- how to use safe mode?

Hello,
Here's a computer question that I should have known the answer to,
about ten years ago . . . .
I have a desktop computer, running Windows 98SE. It had been
working. Suddenly, it will boot in Safe Mode but not in normal mode.
(To be more specific, when I try to start it in normal mode, it gets
as far as the startup logo screen with the clouds, but goes no
farther.)
That means that I'm supposed to run in safe mode and do something to
fix the problem. What, exactly, should I do? How do I find the
problem?

Use MSCONFIG in Safe mode. Set up a Clean Boot, then restart and see if the
system will crank up in Normal mode. That's the first test, anyway. Come
back when you have the results. See here for detailed instructions:
