The most memory that anyone has ever reported using successfully with
Windows 98 is 1.5 gb.

Many systems run into problems with more than 1 gb of RAM, The causes
of these problems have never been fully diagnosed but they are thought
to be hardware related in some way as other systems can and do operate
successfully with as much as 1.5 gb of RAM.

If you exceed 512 mb of RAM with Windows 98 then you must put a limit
on how much RAM that Windows is allowed to map for use as disk cache.
Otherwise when the system is not heavily loaded it will tend to
increase the size of the disk cache to the point where false "out of
memory" errors and sometimes other problems will arise. To prevent
this on a system with more than 512 mb of RAM all that needs to be
done is to add the following line to the [vcache] section of the
system.ini file:
MaxFileCache=512000

As a final note, the design intention was that Windows 98 (also 95 &
Me) would support up to 2 gb of RAM. However the hardware needed to
test this capability was not available until quite some time after
these Windows versions were released so the maximum memory capacity
was never really tested in any practical way. But you will find
documents, especially older ones, that do mention the 2 gb design
capacity.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck
