missing or corrupt files unable to start windows
Posted by juanita curtis on February 4th, 2004

How do I fix the problem when my windows 98 second edition
does not let me enter my pc neither from: 1. normal,
2.bootlog (text), 3. safe mode, 4. command by prompt,
etc,etc,etc.?
My system gives me a reading stating that 3 (three files)
are missing or corrupt: himem.sys; dlbuff.sys and
ifshelp.sys
I have used the boot disk that came with the micronpc and
I have used the windows 98 second edition cd in order to
open and work on my pc and neither of these disks are of
any use. Now I have to borrow somebody's elses' pc and
internet in order to get to my system and try to get the
three files fixed (himem.sys; dlbuff.sys and ifshelp.sys)
I await your comments and suggestions on this problem.

The reference to himem.sys can indicate faulty RAM, or indeed that
the file is missing or corrupt.
Try replacing himem.sys with fresh copy from either your boot
diskette or Win98 CD and see if you can boot to the Desktop.
The file is located in Base5.CAB on the Win98 CD.

Start up with your bootdiskette and enter the command below

1. to copy the file from the diskette :

copy himem.sys C:\Windows

2. to extract it from the CD:

extract /a /l C:\Windows D:\Win98\Base4.CAB himem.sys [make sure
you add the spaces]

Make sure you have extract.exe on your boot diskette and that D: is
your CDROM drive letter, change if necessary.
