- New Hardware Wizard starts everytime I boot
- Posted by Mike Christian on September 1st, 2003
I had to install a new hard drive in my computer, which
led to a clean install of Windows 98SE. I have applied all
updates and patches. Everytime I boot, the New Hardware
Found Wizard starts up and tells me I have some
unidentified new piece of hardware. I do not have anything
that is not already identified in Device Manager.
This had happened to me several months ago, and went away
as mysteriously as it began. Can anyone explain this? I
seem to remember reading something in the last year in
either PC Magazine or PC World magazine about this issue,
but can't recall what I read. I searched the MS
Knowledgebase, but didn't find anything there either.
Thanx,
Mike

Until you can figure out what it is, here's how to keep it from bugging you.
Open up Device Manager (right-click My Computer, select Properties, then the
Device Manager tab) and find the naughty little device (it should be marked
with a yellow question mark) highlight it and select Properties, then check
the box to "Disable in this hardware profile". That will stop it from
bugging you.
This sometimes happens if you install drivers incorrectly and the device
wants to install them correctly when you restart. There's no real way to
tell which device it is, so disable it.
