Random freezing during setup.
Posted by Mike Fern on July 14th, 2004

I have encounterd a very strange error while trying to
install 98 on the system on one of my friends machine. i
am trying to install windows on a brand new HD that has
been partioned and formatted. when we move on to the
install the system will randomly freeze. this happens at
different stages of the install. sometimes it happens
during the install shield, some times it happens when it is
copying files. the setup has never finished fully copying
the files. this is extremely frustraiting having to start
over completely from scratch every time. all of the
solutions that i have found so far have not worked. bios
boot virus detection is disabled, ram has been replaced,
different hard disks, even different cd rom drives. any
help would be appreciated.

You seem to have covered all the bases so that leaves a probable hardware
problem (drive, mobo, power supply). Was the machine freezing prior to
whatever led to the hard drive replacement? What led to the hard drive
replacement? If you got diagnostic software with the new drive, run it and
make sure the drive is not DOA. The software can also be downloaded from
the maker's web site.

the drive was replaced becuase he wanted a bigger one. i
also forgot to mention that it is 98SE if it makes any
difference. the random freezing is what is really throwing
me off though. the machine frooze before with windows
already installed becuase it was poorly matinanced. there
are two things that i belive could be wrong. the processor
had been removed from the mobo, all thermal compund was
cleaned off carefully, then put back on, and thermal
compound was put back on it. so perhaps there isnt enough
compound and over heating, but we arent getting any system
beeps and the display stays on. maybe the cpu was
damagedduring this process although all percautions were
taken. the other concern is that his mobo is damaged in a
specific area but everything seems to be working fine. bios
isnt giving me any problems as far as recognizing the pc's
components.

I think you might be guessing that the prior freezes were due to poor
maintenance and it could just have well been a hardware problem then. I'd
go ahead and check the drive with diagnostic software and put more compound
on the CPU. If no joy, you are then down to replacing parts as
troubleshooting steps and that gets expensive. Maybe the best bet is a
reputable computer repair store.
