How do I remove the Windows 98 update uninstall directory?

I upgraded from Win 98 to Win 2000 and that item was left on the Add/Remove
Programs List.

Is it sufficient to delete the C:\WINDOWS\$Win98UpdateUninstall$ directory
and hack the registry to remove the entry in Add/Remove Programs?

Why not just let Windows handle it? You should be able to use Add/Remove
Programs to remove both the Win98 backup files and the entry in Add/Remove
Programs ... that's what it's for, after all. :-)

directory, but I do not want to take a chance messing up the Win 2000

This is the first time I've ever done an upgrade. I've previously always
done clean installs.
Turns out there's a need to re-install a lot of stuff anyway.

In addition, the win 2000 upgrade uses the same \Windows directory that Win
98 used, so it's hard to tell which may be deleted.
In some cases, such as the Sysbckup directory, it's obvious.
In other cases, I can compare with a clean Win 2000 and delete those
directories not belong to apps.

I guess one approach would be to do a backup, then IMMEDIATELY use
Add/Remove Programs to uninstall and see what happens.
