Setup 98 SE without CD drive
Posted by Jeremy Shreckhise on August 25th, 2003

I am having trouble setting up Windows 98. The work
computer that I have does not have a CD ROM drive. I have
the floppy for 98, but cannot get it to set up. Any help
would be nice. Thanks.

How do you intend to install the system--the floppy start up disk
doesn't contain the necessary files. Are you going to put a CDRom in
the PC temporarily--what is your plan?

Assuming that you have another PC with a CDRom drive in it, remove the
tower cases and set the towers side by side with no power on. In the PC
with the CDRom drive, remove the CDRom cable from the ide connector on
the mother board and hook it to the secondary ide connector in the other
PC. Look at the positioning of the stripe on the ribbon cable so you
know which way to hook it up (i.e., look at the positioning of the
stripe on the other ribbon cable). You can leave the power connection
on the drive. With both PCs running, put the floppy disk in the CDRom
drive and install the system.

I hope you don't try putting a floppy disk in the CDRom drive--what a
blunder that would be <G>. What I obviously meant was put the CD in the
CDRom drive.
