stopped printing to LPT1
Posted by niteowl on September 2nd, 2003

Hi all,

I have a 4 computer network, all win98se, a printer on 2 different
machines, each accessible from all stations. #4 Local printer is an
Epson740, network printer is an EpsonC80. The E740 local printer just
suddenly stopped working, the printer itself seems to be working, all
lights are normal, paper feeds manually.
This machine will print to the network printer but not this local one.

What I've done so far:

Removed the LPT1 port and then rebooted, win98se detected the port and
reinstalled, the printer was left "on" during reboot.

I have removed the printer from Device Manager, rebooted, then
reinstalled by "Add a Printer" function in the Printers folder.

It appears to install properly, but will not print the test page, I get
an error message telling me there was a problem printing to the LPT1
port, and to reset the timeout in the printer properties. I have
checked all those settings and they are the same as they have always been.

I have completely removed both printers and the associated software, (I
HAVE the latest version) then readded them one at a time, the local
printer will not work, the network printer does work. ????

Any ideas?

thanks,
niteowl

Will the printer itself print a test page? If not then the printer may be
bad, if it will then the printer cable may be bad.

Check your 1st layer of troubleshooting: physical layer.

The easiest way is go to command prompt, get a few things
on screen, ie type dir and...

....then type: dir >lpt1

This will do a screenprint to your lpt1 port. From there
you can start troubleshooting. Because if this doesn't
work, it can only be port, cable or printer problem, not
settings or drivers.
