uninstalling and reinstalling

On dial-up I got error message 630 saying that my modem
was not detected. I did 'install new hardware' again with
no change, even using manufacturers CD instead of Windows
source.

Since I didn't know exactly what the problem was I thought
the brute force re-install Windows would overwrite the
problem. It reverted to an older setup of Windows,
unloaded Office and IE6.

The 're-install' at least fixed my modem problem which is
how I'm able to be here.

What happened that Win98 didn't re-install fully from the
CD and why did it unload Office?

I also lost my beautiful background photo a special one
emailed to me from a friend in England. Can I recover it?

I went through the Windows help first and followed the
steps very carefully before I did any of this, but that
made no change to my modem.

Can anyone give me some clues as to what may have happened
with my modem and how I could have fixed it more easily?

Try the phone dialer under accessories, it may be that windows has the
problem, not the hardware.
