- Win 98 Protection Error - vmm32.vxd
- Posted by Gregg on October 3rd, 2004
My hard drive went out, so installed a new one and am
installing Windows 98SE (after which I will subsequently
install the upgrade to XP). Have installed this CD on
other computers of mine in the past, and never had a
problem.
The entire installation is flawless up to and including
the driver database build. Then the computer is
rebooted. (If I remember correctly, after the reboot, it
would then have me set the time properties.) However, it
won't boot up, and the following is displayed:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your
computer.
C:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing/unable to load.
Thanks for any and all help.

There is no need to install W98 first. Install XP and because it is an
upgrade, it will ask during installation to see the W98 disk to verify a
qualifying system.
