After formatting and then reinstalling Windows 98 SE I
have had trouble with the Startup. When Windows starts in
normal mode it hangs, and when I hit "Ctrl + Alt + Del" it
shows 1 program, MSGSRV32, and it is not responding. When
I end task on it, I just get a blank screen with the
windows desktop background. No other programs start. I can
start in Safe Mode.
I have run the System File Checker in Safe Mode, and
found SETUPX.DLL as a corrupted file. But when I replace
the file, it still locks up on restart. I have tried
replacing the MSGSRV32.EXE and SETUPX.DLL files from DOS,
with no effect. I have run Scan Disk, Defrag, DR Watson,
and every other program that I can find to try and trace
the problem. I feel that it may have to do with the modem,
or sound card, since Windows can not seem to find proper
drivers for either when it has started, which is very
rare. The modem is a US Robotics 56k, Voice Win modem. The
sound card is a Sound Blaster Ensoniq AudioPCI. I have
tried to install the proper driver for the modem, but was
not able to install the driver for the sound card due to
its size.
When I searched the Knowledge base for this problem it
returned 1 item that fit, which is listed below. It fix
the problem, but not the cause since there is no Palm
installed.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
